Top 5 Mysterious Places in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small country on the Balkan peninsula with a colorful
culture and interesting history. One could claim it is an untouched gem since people from
other parts of the world have just started to explore it. Very often, visitors to Bosnia and
Herzegovina state that this spectacular country with numerous natural wonders is one of the
most underrated places in the entire Europe. But most of the tourists usually have enough time
to check out only a few major destinations such as Sarajevo - the country's capital, and
perhaps Mostar or Travnik. Most of the other destinations, including major cities like Banja
Luka, Zenica or Tuzla, are usually bypassed due to the shortage of time. And this is rather
unfortunate.
Tourism has started to develop fast in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last five years.
Hence, most of the potential visitors can find a lot of useful information about the country and
its major locations on the Internet. But there are some hidden beauties in this small country
that even the local tour guides are not aware of. Some of these beautiful places are not easy to
explain and others are kind of forgotten. And that's what makes them even more attractive,
right?
For that reason, we have visited some of the places and come up with the list of five
most mysterious ones. They are quite different and moreover, they are placed in all corners of
the country. In fact, some of them are quite difficult to reach, even if you know the exact
position. However, once you finally arrive, it will be worth all the trouble. Other locations are
not that challenging to find but they are hard or almost impossible to be explained. Altogether,
these five places will definitively spark your imagination!
Ancient Pyramids in the Heart of Europe
Pyramids are usually associated with Egypt, Mexico, and some other countries in
America and even Asia, but never with Europe. This is because no pyramids were ever found
in Europe - well at least not until 2006. Semir Osmanagić is a Bosnian archaeologist and
adventurer who settled entire world on fire with his claims about the existence of pyramids in
the middle of Bosnia, near a small town called Visoko.
He claimed Bosnian pyramids are even older than those in Egypt, so he soon started a
vast excavation process. Osmanagić made further discoveries such as huge granite blocks and
deep tunnels within the claimed pyramids. Scientists and volunteers from all over the world
also joined the project that lasts even today. Most of the mainstream scientists don't agree
with Osmanagić, but there are also hundreds of those who are on his side.
Nevertheless, the best way to make sure if the Bosnian pyramids really exist is to visit
them personally. Visoko can be easily reached from Sarajevo by bus or train, or you can
simply rent a car. Finding the pyramids won't be difficult since they are huge and in fact, all
the roads in Visoko lead straight to them.
Was Sisyphus from Bosnia? - Perfect Round Spheres Everywhere
You have all heard about Sisyphus and his severe punishment. Pushing a boulder was
definitively not easy, but it is even harder to explain the origin and purpose of literally
numerous perfectly shaped stone spheres that are showing up all around Bosnia. These
spheres were discovered first in Costa Rica and then later in Bosnia, making them the only
two places in the world that possess such unique artifacts. They have a perfectly round shape
without any traces of human influence. And most intriguing questions are how were they
made and why?
Their purpose is unknown, and although some experts suggest they were made by
various natural influences during a long course of time, most of the scientists, as well as
common people, are not really convinced. No one still has a clear answer about stone spheres
and if you want to see them for yourself, then head up straight to a small town called
Zavidovići. It is located some 100 km from Sarajevo and it can be easily reached by bus.
American Scenery in Bosnia - The Sand Pyramids In Foča
It is not a great surprise to see white sand pyramids in western movies shot in the
United States. But when you see them in Bosnia, or anywhere else on the Balkans, then you
have to be astonished. They are actually made by a combination of various natural, though
quite rare, influences. Despite the scientific explanation, most of the locals still believe it is a
deed of Satan himself. Perhaps this is the reason why only the rare dare to visit sand pyramids
in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, if you are brave enough, you should head
from Sarajevo to a small town in eastern Bosnia called Foča. Satan or no, you should visit the
place during the day since this is a remote area without any illumination devices.
The World War III Headquarters in Konjic
The Cold War was a quite exciting period of human history. There was a constant fear
of World War III which would undoubtedly include nuclear weapons with a potential of
wiping away the entire civilization. That's why many countries have prepared for the worst
case scenario and Yugoslavia was one of them. In fact, during the late 50's, they have started a
number of impressive top-secret projects. Among them, erection of the so-called "Tito's
Bunker" was definitively the most majestic one.
The Bunker was built during a course of 25 years (1953-1979) and only a few people
were aware of its existence. It was carved into an enormous mountain near the small Bosnian
city of Konjic. The Bunker was supposed to be the main HQ for Yugoslav authorities in case
of a possible invasion or nuclear strike. It was finally presented to the public in the early 90's.
Today, after Yugoslavia broke down, it is being used as an artistic and tourist center.
Visitors can freely check it out after they acquire a permission of Bosnian Ministry of
Defences. The permission is always granted but it takes a bit of your time. To avoid any
possible issues, it may be best to go with a professional tour guide. You can easily find one in
Konjic.
The Spiritual Center of Balkan in Međugorje
In 1981, a small remote village in Herzegovina was the main news in all headlines on
a global scale. Six simple peasant children from Međugorje have reportedly seen The Virgin
Mary. The story was even more interesting since Bosnia and Herzegovina were under the
communist rule.
Today, Međugorje is one of the largest Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, despite
the fact that Vatican has never accepted these apparent sightings. Nevertheless, millions of
people come to this place in a search of spiritual satisfaction. Also, there were some reports of
miraculous healings. Hence, it might not be a bad idea of checking all of the stories on your
own. You can easily come to Međugorje by bus or car, especially from the city of Mostar.
