Born in the Netherlands, Mr van der Pol has a degree in human geography and a doctorate in demography.
During his career, he has worked on the collection and analysis of data from censuses, surveys and vital
registration systems in various duty stations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South East Europe. This has
provided him with in-depth knowledge of the use of quantitative methods in policy development, particularly in
developing countries. He has published various works on population statistics, demography, migration and
reproductive health. Mr van der Pol is Director of UNESCO Institute for Statistics (ISU) in Montréal, since 2006.

The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) http://www.uis.unesco.org, headquartered in Montréal, was established in 1999 to meet
the growing needs of UNESCO Member States and the international community for a wider range of policy-relevant, timely, and
reliable statistics in the fields of education, science and technology, culture and communication. The UIS publishes statistical data
and analyses in these fields including statistical abstracts, research and analysis, methodological guides and international
classifications. The UIS is the official data source for the education-related targets of the Millennium Development Goals and
Education for All. UIS statistics on education, literacy and science are featured prominently in leading publications and databases,
such as the EFA Global Monitoring Report, the World Development Indicators and the Human Development Report.

This meeting will convey the importance of the role of the UIS in the world and in Montréal, centre for global statistics of the United
Nations, and its close ties with the other bodies of the United Nations. The speaker will discuss many challenges related to the
objectives of high quality of data of the ISU to realize its vision through cooperation between the Member States and the experts
and statisticians from around the world.
