About the department
o Government Medical College,
Aurangabad has been established in the year 1957.
o Department of Orthopaedics, Government
Medical College, Aurangabad came into existence in
1981. Prior to that it was a part of Surgery Department.
o The first Post-graduate student of Diploma in Orthopaedics
passed out in 1983 and M.S. Orthopaedics in 1984. From the
beginning till date more than 150 students have passed out from
this department. They are working in leading institutions of the
country and abroad and spreading the name and fame of our
Institution.
o The Department is functioning as a full-fledged department with
total bed strength of 120 patients spread over 3 wards - male,
female and spinal injury centre.
o The magnitude of department's service to the population is
amply exhibited by the fact that in last one year it has seen
that on an average 25000 patients in outpatient and
admitted around 1800 patients
o About 2100 major operations and 4500 minor operations
(including day care operations) have been done.
o Major strides have been taken in the management of
traumatic patients including complex fractures and spine
surgeries which are done in both open and endoscopic
manner and also patients who require replacement
surgeries (Hip, knee, Elbow).
o There is a well-equipped and well-staffed Artificial Limb Fitting
Centre in the department.
o There is a well-equipped, well-staffed Physiotherapy department
catering to the rehabilitation of post-operative patients.
o The District Disability & Rehabilitation Centre was established
under the Department of Orthopaedics in the year 2001 wherein
callipers, wheelchairs, tricycle and artificial limbs are distributed
to the patients below poverty line and other affordable patients
at throw away price.
o The department of Orthopaedics, G.M.C.H. Aurangabad, is well
known and patients are coming for treatment from the whole of
Marathwada region and also from far-off places in Vidarbha and
Khandesh.

1. Separate well equipped modular operation Theatre for
Arthroplasty and spine surgery
2. State of the art trauma center
3. Limbs salvage surgeries in orthopaedic malignancies.
4. There are also plans to start degree course in Physiotherapy
and occupational therapy.
