IUCAA, PUNE PARTHIV BHATT 008 VARUN BHOGLE 009 ABOUT IUCAA • The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is an autonomous institution set up by the University Grants Commission to promote nucleation and growth of active groups in Astronomy and Astrophysics in Indian universities. • IUCAA has a campus designed by Indian architect Charles Correa. History • After the founding of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) by Prof. Govind Swarup, a common research facility for astronomy and astrophysics was proposed by Dr. Yash Pal of the planning commission. • Working on this idea, Astrophysicist Prof. Jayant Narlikar, along with Ajit Kembhavi and Naresh Dhadich set up IUCAA within the Pune University campus in 1988.

ACCESSIBILITY • The various departments of Pune University can be approached by the internal pathways provided by the University. • The IUCAA is accessible through every means of transport for anyone. • The distance from Pune city to IUCAA is of 4.8 kms. • Khadki Railway station is around 2.4 kms away from this institute. • Pune international airport is the farthest at a distance of 13 kms approximately. APPROACH AND • IUCAA,PUNE HAS ONLY ONE ENTRANCE AT THE START OF THE COMPLEX. IUCAA CAN BE REACHED VIA CAR OR ENTRANCES: EVEN TRAIN. RELATION WITH SURROUNDINGS
• The overall area surrounding the Pune
University is mostly residential. • Emergency services are readily available. • IUCAA is located in the University of Pune campus next to the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics. • Also surrounded by IUCAA Chandrashekhar Auditorium, Pune University Tennis Court, IUCAA Complex Housing. LANDSCAPE • The climate here is hot and dry due to which we can see a lot of deciduous dry forest. • IUCAA Pune showcases one of the best landscapes such as the Black hole, roche lobes, etc. • The Black Hole is an unique visual of gardening in landscape. It depicts the theoretical Black Hole. • Binary Star Trees planted here are very much intriguing. • Serpenski’s gasket is a unique gardening texture triangular in shape.

STRUCTURE • The whole IUCAA is one of the best projects done by Ar. Charles Correa. • Charles Correa with the help of the three founding members of IUCAA have carefully calculated each and every part of IUCAA. • In IUCAA’s structure, all the elements are placed in a proper order to suit the students comfort. • The whole structure of IUCAA has full
natural ventilation. • The open spaces in the Black Hole garden and other such courtyards allow free flow of air for ventilation. • IUCAA doesn’t actually have much classrooms except for laboratories. • The whole structure has more than enough sunlight to brighten the day. • There are numerous voids made in the walls so that the sunlight passes through those voids and shine everywhere. Legal Disputes • IUCAA, even though it’s an amazing nephew served a notice to IUCAA regarding the establishment has had some disputes with some Contract signed by P.L. of the royalties of Pune. • This case was resolved by P.L.’s wife Sunita • During the construction of IUCAA they had Deshpande giving the copyrights of P.L.’s books signed a legal contract with P. L. Deshpande. and other material to the centre. • The contract stated the legal deals between the two parties. • Later the youngest son of the P. L. Deshpande’s INFERENCE
• How different idols/sculptures of great
mathematician and physicist were made so as to have a positive aura around the students and also to boost them up in the field which they're in. • How complex, but how simple architecture was used by sir Charles correa, he managed to have everything which is required for a university in a very basic manner and still made the university look appealing. He worked on quality rather then quantity. • If we have a look at the plan of the university it seems as if it's a geometrical shape .i.e. a triangle which again is bounded with the great mathematicians as well physicist who devoted everything for the study of science.
