1. “The purpose of mass drug distribution (chemoprophylaxis) is to ensure the protection

of a community against infection or to treat members of the community where the
disease is highly prevalent, WITHOUT SUBMITING individuals to a preliminary clinical
investigation. “What are the potential health risks regarding this preventive measure?”

- Mass drug distribution involves giving treatment to every individual, whether they are
infected or not, depending on data acquired through analysis and assessment from the
affected population.. It is vital to control, prevent and treat individual from infection; but,
using antibiotics repeatedly and maintaining poor hygiene and sanitation will only result in
an increase of drug-resistant bacteria that will be more difficult to cure, if not impossible to
treat.

2. The main current options for vector control are the following. Describe each of these
method
a) Larval control
-Larval control is the use of materials that either kill mosquito larvae or prevent their
ability to grow into adult mosquitoes. These materials are placed into known and
potential breeding sites throughout the district such as catch basins, ditches and
flood prone areas. This preventive measure also includes eliminating breeding sites
through environmental control, such as like proper disposal and community
cleaning.

b) Control of adult vectors

-Adult Vector control is a preventive measure that use materials such as space
sprays or residual sprays to eliminate and reduce adult vectors. The goal of this
vector control is to significantly reduce the adult vector population, which will most
likely occur during a disease outbreak.

c) Limitation of contact between vectors and humans (personal protection measures)

- This vector control involves the use of personal prophylaxis such as bed nets, repellents, and
other personal items to prevent and reduce contact with vectors that may carry disease.
