MODULE 2

Functions and Philosophical Import of Art

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Distinguish directly functional and indirectly functional art,
2. Explain and discuss the fundamental philosophical perspective on the art,
3. Realize the function of art forms in life, and
4. Apply concepts and theories on beauty and appeal in real-life scenarios.

Introduction
Did you ever wonder what the monument of Rizal is all about? Or why is a
particular art so distracting, relaxing, or amusing? If not, this lesson will teach you how a
work of art exists inside a clear purpose and function. For a purpose, all artwork
persists, establishing the functions of the arts.
This module will help you understand the functions of the arts. It is divided into
three categories: physical, social, and personal. In any given work of art, these divisions
can and sometimes overlap. When you're ready to start thinking about these functions,
here's how to do it.

Lesson 1: Functions of Art

When it comes to function, different art forms come with exclusive functions.
Some art forms are more useful than others. When we question the value of
Architecture and Applied Arts, it lies in the practical benefits one gains from it. It is made
for a specific purpose. However, whenever we challenge the meaning of painting and
literature, it is the result of art itself.
