Art is classified in different ways.
Writers and philosophers have their own classification
of art.

According to Webster (1987)


-the major art involves man’s skills to create works of art that are in form, content, and
execution. Appeal to sense of hearing and feeling.
-the minor arts lies in ‘styling’ and are addressed primarily to the sense of sight and their
usefulness.

According to Manaois
-There are (2) general dimensions of arts
1. Fine arts/independent arts – made especially for aesthetic enjoyment.
2. Practical arts/utilitarian arts – intended for practical use or functional purpose.

-Grouped arts into (6)
1. Visual Arts- artworks perceived by our eyes, which may be classified into graphic and
plastic art.
2. Performing Arts- include theatre, play, dance, and music.
3. Literary Arts- include short stories, novels, poetries, and dramas.
4. Popular Arts- include the film, newspaper, magazine, radio and television.
5. Gustatory Art of the Cuisine- involves skill in food preparation.
6. Decorative Arts- visual objects produced by beautifying houses, offices, cars and other
structure.

everyday chores.

Ex. mathematics, astronomy,

Fine Arts
- are the product of human creative activity as they express
beauty in different ways and media for the satisfaction and
relaxation of man’s mind and spirit.

Major Arts
- are characterized by their actual
and potential expressiveness and
by a purely disinterested purpose.
Ex. music, poetry, sculpture
Minor Arts
- are works connected with
practical uses and purposes.
Ex. interior decoration,
porcelain
Plastic Arts
- are developed through space and perceived by the sense of sight.
Ex. painting, sculpture, architecture
Phonetic Arts
- are based on sounds and words as media of
expression.
Ex. music, drama, literature
Kinetic Arts
- make use of the rhythmic
movement as media of
expression.
Ex. dance
Pure Arts
- utilize only one medium of
expression.
Ex. sound in music, color in
painting
Mixed Arts
- use two or more media
Ex. the opera (which is a
combination of music,
poetry, drama)
