KathCakes is the business firm that has been conceptualized. It is a cake shop business which
entertains customers who really love sweets recipes that do not contain high sugar as an ingredient to
avoid fat because we want to serve a quality product that is affordable and convenient to their taste
especially their health. It has different fruit flavors, however, we still think of the great innovation of the
product to make it more interesting and patronized by the customer.
Discrimination is unequal treatment of people and group based on characteristics. They are
usually discriminated against because of the color of their skin or racism, gender, age and sexual
orientation. This happens anytime and anyplace that might cause various negative effects on the mental,
physical and sociological aspect of the victim. As I said, it happens in anyplace so therefore, it is also
popular in the workplace. Many employers experience discrimination due to a lot of reasons. They called
it workplace discrimination which involve an employee being fired, demoted or denied a promotion due
to their race or color. A business has a charge of discrimination or a signed statement asserting that an
employer or organization engaged in employment discrimination. When someone feels that he/she
encountered discrimination, they can file a charge about it and it can be completed through our Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). It is a Philippine commission responsible for enforcing
federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee due to their race,
color, religion, sex including pregnancy, transgender status and sexual orientation.
The example case is that, one of the employee of KathCakes is Muslim and the other are all
Christian Catholic. Some employee can’t relate to the personality and how the Muslim employee act in
the workplace therefore the Christian employees discriminate her. They keep on saying hurtful words in
the Muslim employee and even harass her physically that caused her to feel anxious and inability to work
well. With regards, her work in the workplace being affected that makes her a low performance. With this
discrimination, the owner of the business takes an action regarding this matter. The Muslim employee file
a charge of discrimination to the owner of the business next to the commission of the Philippines that
implement an equal right for the Employment. After she files a case, those employees are being fired as a
punishment for their unlawful action.
To avoid this kind of scenario, the KathCakes listed some details that will avoid the cases of
discrimination in the workplace. As the owner, I want to protect the rights of my employees and will
allow them to take actions in whatever unlawful acts that someone or even the company caused to
him/her. So, to protect the company from discrimination, the anti-discrimination policy is implement. The
company should be able to clear it to all their employees that all types of discrimination in the workplace
are illegal and unacceptable. The discrimination policy should explain the process for reporting incidents
of discrimination and to accomplish it, the company create and integrate a policy that includes
discrimination, retaliation and harassment. Next, developing and integrating mandatory training is a must.
All employees are mandatory attend to the training that the company preferred to allow them to
understand every aspect of discrimination and what are its causes. Lastly, investigate complaints promptly
that establish an investigatory process to resolve each situation quickly and effectively. Disciplinary
action may range from further training to termination depending on the severity of the behavior.
Human resource planning is important in every aspect of business because this serve as the guide
in starting or running a business. When it is very much planned, then it would be easy for the company to
run a productive company because they believe that a good employee requires the best experience. The
department of Human Resources protects the company from any issues that may arise within the
workforce including the discrimination happened inside the workplace. The importance of HR is, it helps
to identify the employee’s performance and creates an organization’s strategic objectives. This will help
the firm to engage in a different competition that will surely identify the possible action that the
competitor planned. The steps or procedure that I will adopt in the business firm for human resource
planning are, analyze the HR strength. It includes the number of employees, their skills, qualifications,
experience, age, contracts, the ratings and performance. It is necessary for the HR management to have
the skills in choosing the right employee that will handle different workloads in the workplace. Next, HR
requirements should be forecast, I mean when hiring a future HR, they should typically look at the market
industry analysis in order to gauge future requirements. This will need to understand the goal of the
organization that will project an essential level of planning a HR. Lastly, integrate the plan with the
organization’s overall strategy. This required an estimated budget for human resources that can be used in
recruiting, training or redundancies. Human resource planning positively affects the business because it
prepares the HR department for changing requirements; with human resources, the organization will not
caught-off guard in the shifting workforce market. And it gains competitive advance through rapid rollout
of new products or into new markets.

In running the business, the selection process is a series of steps that companies use to hire the best
workers. Recruitment happens first, and selection takes place after. The KathCakes needs a selection
process in medical examination because the business can’t perform well when the employee has illness.
With different medical tests, the owner will identify which among the applicants should be hired. In
addition, the KathCakes is a food business and it will definitely need a medical examination to avoid any
depicts when performing their job. Conducting a background investigation is also necessary to secure
information about the potential hires. It generally involves identifying whether an applicant is qualified or
not for the available position due to a record of criminal conviction, different violations like motor vehicle
violations, and misrepresentation regarding education or work history. So, as the owner of the firm, I will
include the background investigation and medical examination in the selection process because this will
be very vital in running a business. It has a lot of advantages when these are included in the selection
process. This will identify and will guide the business along its way. Good background of the employee
will reflect on the business therefore; it should be part of selecting the employees.
Performance appraisal methods systematic evaluation of an individual with respect to performance
on the job and the potential of an individual. The appraiser or the manager of the business will provide
constructive, actionable feedback based on the assessment of the employee. The appraisal method that I
used is ratings scale because it is considered as the most common method of appraisal. Under this method,
the employees are evaluated on the basis of various job performance criterions, each criterion is
categorically divided into poor, fairly good, good and excellent. This method will identify the
performance of each employee and this will serve as the feedback for the appraiser to identify who among
the employees deserve the reward like promotion. The appraiser or manager will be clear in explaining
the rating system in this approach because there’s a possibility of misunderstanding occur. In evaluating
the performance of the employee, observing and criticizing their works are the indicators that serve as a
good reference both intrinsic and extrinsic for the employee.
