I. Introduction
A. Brief summary of the article
B. Where did it come from?
C. Who is the audience for this article (consider where it was published)
D. Relevance of the article (how does the author make (or not make) the case for
the relevance of this topic, and do you agree?)
E. Who is the author? Authority to speak on this subject?
F. Roadmap
G. Thesis statement

II. Body 1: Brief summary of the article and the main points (written for someone who has
not read your article)
A. What is the author’s overall argument?
B. How is this an issue of justice (according to the author, or as you see it)?
C. What claims does the author use and what are some types of evidence he or she
uses to support those claims?

III. Body 2: First claim and the author’s use of evidence + your evaluation of the use of the
evidence.
A. What is the claim that the author is making (to support his or her position?)
B. What type of evidence was used?
C. How did the author use it (quote, statistics, etc.)
D. Was this good evidence (you have to go and find it to evaluate it)? Was it used
well? Does it support what the author was claiming it did? Did it make the
author’s case?

IV. Body 3: Second claim (by the author) and the author’s use of evidence + your evaluation
of the use of the evidence
A. What is the claim that the author is making (to support his or her position?)
B. What type of evidence was used?
C. How did the author use it (quote, statistics, etc.)
D. Was this good evidence (you have to go and find it to evaluate it)? Was it used
well? Does it support what the author was claiming it did? Did it make the
author’s case?

V. Body 4: What is one other article/study/research you found that would either help
support the author’s main argument OR refute it?
A. Name of source
B. Type of source
C. How it either could support the author’s argument (This would have added by....)
or refute the author’s argument)

VI. Conclusion: restate your thesis and your conclusion on whether or not this is a good
article on justice to be included in the book you will publish on justice.
