1. Enumerate and briefly elaborate the four (4) principles included in the Code of Ethics for
Philippine Psychologists.

Principle 1: Respect for the Dignity of Persons and Peoples

The first principle asserts that psychologists will always hold others' honor regardless of
physical, cultural, and geographical differences. It maintains the importance of preserving the
rights to privacy and confidentiality of every person without reservations. Clients are entitled to
receiving respect for their right to say no or yes (informed consent) without the fear of negative
consequences. Psychologists are also expected to treat others with respect and should always
value uniqueness. It is the principal ethic because mutual respect builds the foundation of ethical
interactions of people with one another. Holding one's dignity with respect imbues the person
with confidence and self-worth to seek the help that he/she needs from a psychologist.

Principle 2: Competent Caring for the Well-Being of Persons and Peoples

In the second principle, psychologists maximize their capabilities to hone their

knowledge and skills to be competent enough to handle the clients’ diverse situations and
predicaments. It is necessary to study hard even at the beginning of one’s journey towards the
path of psychology. Studying hard can be exhibited by enthusiastically reading and
understanding as many psychological concepts as one can. A competent caring also means that
the professional invests in taking care of his/her holistic health; physical, mental, and emotional.
A psychologist equipped with intellectual and emotional competence benefits his/her clients
because their problems and issues attain adequate attention and care.

Principle 3: Integrity

The third principle is about honesty across all aspects; it gives importance to truthfulness
in everything professional psychologists state without the supervision of a higher authority. It
means that psychologists should never lie about the data in scientific writings or clients’ records
they encode. Unless psychologists deem it necessary to tell their clients about their personal life,
they should never lie and say inaccurate information with malicious intent. For example, a
psychologist aiming to win in an international competitive novel dissertation writing symposium
manipulated his/her data by writing wrong information to obtain favorable results. The act
violates the third principle because the psychologist should only present the data regardless of its
value in his/her scientific writing. After all, it is his/her responsibility to uphold integrity.

Principle 4: Professional and Scientific Responsibilities to Society

The fourth principle states that psychologists are to maintain a beneficent nature with the
community and society in general. Being ‘beneficent’ in the sense that the practice of
psychology must seek to contribute to the prosperity of humans and improvement in their way of
life through the utilization of their professional skills in a scientific manner; objectivity with
warmth. Psychologists are also responsible for fostering developments in communities that will
enable these groups to become productive part of society. One example that I can think of is
when psychological society groups organize social events such as webinars, seminars, and
society mental health check-ups that cultivate awareness within the human society.

2. Discuss the research method/s you will use in your current research proposal. Identify the
advantages of using your chosen method/s of research.

We are proposing research that tackles on the experiences of young adults engaging in bedtime
procrastination during the COVID-19 pandemic. It utilizes qualitative research with a descriptive
phenomenological approach in order to describe the phenomenon in the participants’ perspective,
learn about their experiences on the phenomenon, and how it affects their daily life especially in
the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data that we will be obtaining from the semi-structured
interview will be examined using Thematic Analysis to be able to identify common themes that
describes the phenomenon we are studying. The advantage of a qualitative phenomenological
study is that it values the uniqueness of everyone's perspective. It recognizes everyone's capacity
to study experience, as everyone is familiar with what it is to be human. Phenomenology lacks
too much complicated jargons that can only be understood by those who specialized with the
knowledge and is therefore widely considered a "vernacular" philosophy/science.
