Reflection Paper # 10

Immune System Module

Context

I like this module because the immune system module is very familiar to me. We

had this subject in pre medicine. This was one of my favourite subjects back in college

because it is interesting and this is very applicable in the laboratory setting. This module

is important because as future physicians, we need to know how to properly diagnose

patients with problems in their immune system and provide the appropriate treatment.

The following program outcomes were utilized in this module: PO #1, developing clinical

competence, PO #2, developing effective communication, PO #6, utilizing a systems-

based approach to healthcare, PO #7, engaging in continuing personal and professional

development, PO #8, adhering to ethical, professional and legal standards, PO #9,

demonstrating nationalism, internationalism and dedication to service, and finally, PO

#10 which is practicing the principles of social accountability.

Experience

This was a very fulfilling module because we were able to encounter various

activities. We were able to review some of the basic concepts that involve the immune

system such as central tolerance, peripheral tolerance, and autoimmunity. We were

able also to discuss about disorders that affect the immune system such as the

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. We had activities such as SGD with our groupmates

which highlights PO # 1 and # 2. We also had different pre-recorded lectures which are

in line with PO #6, #7, #9 and #10. In addition to the different pre-recorded lectures, we

also had a pathology laboratory which helped us learn the characteristics of a Lupus
Erythematosus cell and other cells or tissues that are part of this module. This highlights

PO #2, #6, #7, #9 and #10.

Reflection

I feel like the small group discussions we had in this module was very interesting

and I also felt like we each learned a lot. All of my groupmates including myself were

kind enough to show pictures of the different cells of the immune system since it is

difficult to really picture out how the cells would look like if we just read the book. The

small group discussion is in line with PO # 1 and PO # 2 because we were able to

prepare and discuss thoroughly and that helped us practice clinical competence and

communication. The pre-recorded lectures certainly help us improve as students, and

there are just some things that you can learn better if they are discussed by a

professional rather than just reading by ourselves. The lecturer can really help highlight

the important information from the book. This highlights PO #6, #7, #9 and #10.

Laboratory really helped highlight most of the program outcomes because in the

laboratory, we need to work hard to understand what we are looking at under the

microscope. We also communicate with each other and we asked those who already

are familiar with the specimens. The laboratory is necessary in any module since as

future physicians, we should be able to be familiar with the different specimens.

Action

My first plan of action is to read more on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. SLE is

one of the most common autoimmune disorders. A lot of people, even some celebrities,

have SLE and it is quite complex disorder. Since it is quite complex, it would make

sense to spend more time on reading about it so that when I encounter a patient in the

future with SLE, I would be able to know what is the best management that is specific

for the patient. Another plan of action is to practice more on the laboratory portion of the
module. Laboratory to me is very interesting. I always liked looking at the different

specimens under the microscope ever since I was still in medical technology. During my

free time, I will be looking into more of the different specimens affected by immune

system disorders because not only am I interested in them, but also because I know

one day this will pay off.

Evaluation

I think my efforts for this module was quite good and enough. I was able to study

hard. I was able to study also ahead of time. Even though the schedule was hectic and

this entire module fell on the same schedule where I was in the OB rotation so I felt like

I did well in managing my time. This exam was not too difficult also. The exam

compared to the previous exams in other modules was not as difficult and I know a lot

of students passed this exam. Overall, the module itself was good because I was able

to learn a lot. I was able to learn about SLE and other diseases that affect the immune

system. The lecturers were able to discuss well and I was able to listen to those lectures

as well with understanding. I hope I will encounter more lectures or laboratory activities

on the immune system in the future.
