Reflection Paper

Integumentary System

Context

The module was all about studying burns and the different types of skin cancers.
This is an interesting topic and relevant because there are a lot of patients who come in
the clinic with unexplained asymmetry or increases of diameter of nodules in their skin.
Some patients would come in the emergency room due to having burns. This module is
important because as future physicians, we need to know how to properly diagnose
these patients and provide the appropriate treatment. The following program outcomes
were utilized in this module: PO #1, developing clinical competence, PO #2, developing
effective communication, PO #6, utilizing a systems-based approach to healthcare, PO
#7, engaging in continuing personal and professional development, PO #8, adhering to
ethical, professional and legal standards, PO #9, demonstrating nationalism,
internationalism and dedication to service, and finally, PO #10 which is practicing the
principles of social accountability.

Experience

This module was not as difficult as the previous modules we have encountered in
block 2. I like studying burns because the topic itself is interesting and can be applied to
the happenings today. It is not rare to witness patients with burns due to cooking or due
to spillage of hot substances. I am sure all of us have experience those in our lives. We
had various online activities to learn more about burns and the different types of skin
cancers. We had activities such as SGD with our groupmates which highlights PO # 1,
and # 2. We also had different pre-recorded lectures which are in line with PO #6, #7,
#9 and #10. Aside from the pre-recorded lectures, we also had a laboratory session
which is necessary because to fully understand the different types of skin cancers, we
need to know how they look like on gross examination and also under the microscope.
This highlights PO #2, #6, #7, #9 and #10.

Reflection

I feel like the small group discussions we had in this module was very interesting
and I also felt like we each learned a lot. Since it is almost impossible to study the
different carcinomas without showing actual pictures, my groupmates were kind enough
to show pictures during the SGD. The small group discussion is in line with PO # 1 and
PO # 2 because we were able to prepare and discuss thoroughly and that helped us
practice clinical competence and communication. The pre-recorded lectures certainly
help us improve as students, and there are just some things that you can learn better if
they are discussed by a professional rather than just reading by ourselves. The lecturer
can really help highlight the important information from the book. This highlights PO #6,
#7, #9 and #10. Laboratory really helped highlight most of the program outcomes
because in the laboratory, we need to work hard to understand what we are looking at
under the microscope. We also communicate with each other and we asked those who
already are familiar with the specimens. Laboratory also helped us improve our
understanding and therefore helped us as students.

Action

My first plan of action is to read more about burns. Whenever I get the chance,
for example, if I come across an article on the newspaper about at incident that involves
a house on fire with people inside, I will make sure to read the entire article and then I
will begin to learn and read more about the effects of burns and the causes of burns.
This is a good way to learn because it would help me apply my knowledge to real life
situations. My next plan of action is to quiz myself. I feel like to really learn something, I
have to question myself. I found that if I do that, that will really help me retain knowledge
and I know this is will come in handy in the future in the hospital setting. My next plan of
action is also to manage my time properly. Managing time is the one of the most
important skills not only in medicine but in everyday life. Therefore, I will do my best to
improve in managing my time.
Evaluation

I think my efforts for this module was quite good and enough. This exam was fair.
My attitude towards this module was positive because I tried to not let my past exam
scores affect how I felt about this module. I knew that this module would be a fresh start
and I could make up for the other modules I did not do really well. Since my outlook for
this module was positive, I can say that it paid off. I was able to manage my time
efficiently. I was able to study ahead of time. I was able to prepare for small group
discussions. I was able to study for the laboratory session. Overall, this module was
also good because the module was interesting and I think that is important because it
really helps us students get hooked into studying the module. I hope we will be able to
encounter more modules like this in the future.
