Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a broadband internet connection has a minimum

download speed of 25 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 3 Mbps. Speedtest Global Index said that
in terms of mobile internet speed, the Philippines ranks 103rd among 139 surveyed countries. The
country's average mobile internet download speed of 15.06 Megabits per second. In terms of fixed line
internet, the Philippines ranked 101st among 179 countries. The Philippines' average speed of 19.51
Mbps was much slower than the global average of 57.91 Mbps.

How it affects the economy

Economic competitiveness
It seems that slow internet service affected the steep drop in the country’s economic competitiveness,
this according to a member of congress, Rep. Luis Campos Jr. “There’s no question our overall
economic efficiency has been weighed down by inadequate yet costly Internet connectivity,” Campos
said, citing the country’s lackluster Internet connectivity, which has been rated the slowest in Asia. The
Makati city representative was reacting to the Philippines’ nine-notch drop to the 50th spot out of 63
economies in the 2018 World Competitiveness Yearbook rankings of the International Institute for
Management Development.

Poor connectivity adversely affects businesses, consumers and government agencies that have become
increasingly reliant on the Internet to perform daily transactions, the lawmaker said.

How it affects the people of the country

About half of the population is below 28-years-old, which means they are likely tech-savvy consumers.
Less than 10 per cent of adult Internet users in the Philippines relied on the Internet to make online
purchases in 2014. Even with this, online shopping and other related businesses are expected to get a
boost with the increasing Internet and smartphone penetration.

Better Internet services can only mean good things for consumers and businesses.

For one, faster Internet connections can aid in the further growth of mobile shopping and social
commerce. According to recent statistics from 2014, a high double-digit share of online shoppers in the
country used their phones to make purchases, more than any other country in Southeast Asia.

The real benefits of a good internet are far more substantial – and could even affect a country’s GDP.

At the heart of these communication networks the Internet ensures the production, distribution, and use
of digitized information in all formats.
