1. How many orbitals does the 6th energy level have? Give the values of the 3 quantum numbers
(n, l, and ml) for each orbital in the 4f subshell/orbital (subshells are a collection of orbitals
which are denoted by s, p, d, f..).

Answer: There are 36 orbitals in the 6th energy level. The quantum numbers of the 4f sublevels are
n= 4 and I= 3. Hence,ml can only be +3, +2, +1, 0,-1, -2, and -3 as I= 3. There are in total 7

orbitals for the 4f sublevel where each of the orbital can have electrons with +1/2 and -1/2.
2. What type of orbital is designated n=4, l=2, ml=−2? Which orbitals cannot exist? 2p 3p 4d 3f 6s
2d. Explain briefly.

Answer: Given, n=4. So, l=0,1,2,3. As l=2 and the value of Subshell d=2 as we already know. For this
reason, the orbital is 4d. Here 2d 3f can not be existed. In case of 2d, n=2 and here l= (n-1) = 0,1. The
value of d orbital= 2. Since, the value of l is o and 1.That is why 2d is not possible In the similar way, in
case of 3f n=3, l= (n-1) = 0,1,2. We know the value of f orbital= 3. Here the value of l is 0,1,2. So, 3f is not
possible.

3. What is the maximum number of electrons if n+l value is 4? Justify your answer briefly.
Following the Aufbau rule, order these orbitals according to the energy level. 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, 4p,
4d, 4f, 5s, 5p, 5d, 5f

Answer: They can have maximum 8 electrons, since there are 4 orbitals included. 4s (n = 4, l = 0) and (n
= 3, l = 1) orbitals can have n + l =4. According to the Aufbau rule, the order of the orbitals are 3s, 3p, 4s,
3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 4f, 5d, 5f

4. Make an order of following elements according to the number of the unpaired electron: 6C, 7N,
8O, 9F. Write down the electronic configuration of 46Pd.

Answer: 9F>6C>7N>8O. The electronic configuration of 46Pd is 1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^2, 3p^6, 4s^2,
3d^10, 4p^6, 5s^0, 4d^10.

5. Which of the electronic configuration between 25Mn & 24Cr does not follow the Aufbau
principle? Explain in your own words briefly. How do we write and name the spin of electron?

Answer: The electronic configuration of 24Cr does not follow the Aufbau principal. When we see the
electronic configuration of Cr(24) the last d orbital is having 4 electrons in outermost shell but to attain
the stability it should have at least 5 electrons in its d subshell. So to attain the stability it will take 1
electron from the s shell and will attain the stability .This is why this doesn't follow the Aufbau principle .
Spin of electron is the fourth quantum number for electrons in atoms. Characterized as ms, the electron
spin is named by either upward (ms=+1/2) or downward (ms=−1/2) .
