the speakers of one of the languages will have in learning the
o t h e r . T h e r e s u l t s of s u c h c o m p a r i s o n s h a v e p r o v e d of f u n d a 
m e n t a l v a l u e f o r t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of t e a c h i n g m a t e r i a l s t e s t s a n d

dict and describe the patterns that will cause difficulty in learn

T h e s t y l e of p r e s e n t a t i o n i s a d d r e s s e d p r i m a r i l y t o t h e t r a i n e d
t e a c h e r of f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e s . I t i s h o p e d t h a t w i t h p r o p e r i n c e n 
t i v e a n d f a v o r a b l e c i r c u m s t a n c e s h e m a y a p p ly t h e m a t e r i a l t o
t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of b e t t e r t e x tb o o k s t e s t s a r t i c l e s a n d e x p e r i 
m e n t s a n d c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e g e n e r a l i m p r o v e m e n t of t h e t e a c h i n g

native and foreign language lies the key to ease or difficulty in
f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e l e a r n i n g , w a s a p p l i e d t o t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of l a n -
guage achievement tests by Lado.4
1 .3 A p r a c t i c a l c o n f i r m a t i o n of t h e v a l i d i t y of o u r a s s u m p t i o n
has come from the work of linguists who study the effect of close
c o n t a c t b e t w e e n la n g u a g e s in b i l i n g u a l s i t u a t i o n s . T h e y r e p o r t
that many linguistic distortions heard among bilinguals correspond
to de scr iba ble differences in the langua ges involved. Exte nsive
stud ies have been ca rr ie d out by Haugen and Weinreic h in this
area.5
