SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

ASSESSMENT TASK

1. Describe briefly how science and technology evolved during each period in history

Science and technology has been around from the beginning of time. It evolves from everyday
efforts of the people trying to improve their way of living.

Science and technology in the Philippines started before Spain colonized our country. In this
time, science and technology was evident in the handicraft, pottery, weaving, meatal ware and
boats used by ancient filipino.

In the period of Spanish colonial, the Spaniards introduced formal education and founded
scientific institution.

In the time of American period and Post Commonwealth Era, agriculture, food processing,
forestry, medicine, and pharmacy was inclined.

In the time of Marcos Era and martial law, science was given importance. He declared that the
‘Advancement of Science and Technology shall have priority in national Development’

In Fifth Republic period, the national science and technology authority was replaced by the
department of science and technology, giving the department of representation in the cabinet

During President Fidel V. Ramos’ term, there were noticeable improvement regarding science
and technology. There was a significant increase in personnel specializing in science and
technology.

In time of President Joseph Estrada, two, major legislations that he signed were the Philippine
clean air of 1999 REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8749 which was designed to protect and preserve the
environment and ensure the sustainable development of its natural resources, and electronic
commerce act of 2002

In the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration, the science and technology sector of the
Philippines was dubbed as the golden age of science and technology by secretary Estrella
Alabastro.

In the time of President Benigno Aquino, it improves the efficiency of both land and water, the
government passed Republic Act 10601 which improves the agriculture and fisheries sector
through mechanization.
2. Write your own impression on the current science education in the Philippines

It develops students' scientific inquiry skills, values and attitudes, such as objectivity, curiosity, and
honesty and habits of mind including critical thinking.

3. Find out what concrete products in science you see in the future

This International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) was created by Society for Science & the Public
and sponsored by Intel. The potential of chemical products for enriching society appeared to be
unlimited. The advantages to the Atlas system are that wall forms are set to full wall height for one-
storey structures, form ties are widely spaced to provide room for thorough and timely compaction,
there are a limited number of tie holes to patch and large areas of formwork can be set and re-set
quickly. Of course, all of this will necessitate further developments in production control. The idea is
simple enough: you mix together small particles (like sand) and slightly bigger particles (like tiny
pebbles) with water and some sort of paste that will set and keep the whole thing together. Scientific
studies & progress result into wonderful technologies! Since then, Portland cement has made concrete
one of the most popular construction materials in the world.

REFLECTION

Prepare a written report on your reaction/ mpression of our life today with the advancement in science
and technology

Today, we are still suffering because of pandemic. Specially as a student, schools has been close for
almost two years, before we see impossible things on how to continue our studies. But because
technology is improving, it helps us to still grow and achieve our current achievements. We use
technology to interact with our co-student and to our teachers. Technology also helps us to be updated
on what’s happening to the world.
