Diagnostics and Laboratory Activity

Answer the following questions below.

1. Differentiate Grading versus Staging of Cancer in your own words.

ANSWER: Grading is evaluating how abnormal the cancer cells look under the
microscope and how differentiated they are from normal cells. It is also a method used by
doctors to identify the rate at which the cancer would likely grow. While staging is when
the doctor evaluates how large the tumour is and how far the cancer has spread in the body.

2. What are the Nursing Responsibilities in the diagnostics of cancer patients?

ANSWER: A patient going through extensive diagnostic testing is likely fearful of the
procedures and would feel anxious about the possible test results. The nurse’s
responsibility is to help relieve fear and anxiety by explaining to the patient the tests to be
performed, the sensations likely to be felt, and the patient’s role during the test procedures.
The nurse should encourage the patient and family to voice out their worries about the test
results, patients and their families during testing, and reinforce and clarify information
provided by the doctors. The nurse also motivates the patient and family members to
communicate and discuss their questions with each other.

3. Differentiate Surgery as a diagnostic tool and as a treatment of cancer in your own words.
ANSWER: When surgery is used as a diagnostic tool for cancer, the doctor collects a
sample of the cells for testing in the laboratory which is a procedure called biopsy. On the
other hand, surgery as a treatment is when the cancerous growth is removed by the surgeon
or reduced in size from the body.
