LEARNING TO BE SILENT
There is a lot of noise in today's fast-paced modern world. Not only is there physical noise in the
world, but there is also mental noise in our minds. We are thinking about a lot of things at any given
time. Either thinking about the past, planning for the future or worrying or feeling anxious. Most of
us extrapolate that into our daily lives and talk a lot. This constant talking, which feeds the noisy
mind and drains its energy, causes a great deal of misery. In a reactive mode, we are compelled to say
things, offer advice, speak out against, or even abuse. Our environment triggers our mind, which then
reacts by speaking out – often without even thinking. The flip side is that in our haste to speak, we
forget to listen. When we don't listen, we don't understand what others are saying, and
communication breaks down. Being silent allows you to be a good listener. Silence allows you to
reflect and think through situations. Being silent means being present in the moment. Mindfulness

practice can help one achieve this type of "noble silence." Pay attention to what others are saying
when you are conversing with them. Breathe deeply and attentively, and be present in the moment.
Pay close attention to what the other person is saying. You are not required to respond or make ideal

chatter. The other person will be delighted simply by your presence at this time.
When confronted with a situation that makes you angry, concentrate on your in-breath and out-

breath. Do not react as you normally would. Nothing should be said. Be silent. Breathe. Keep a half-
smile on your face and be present in the moment. Decide whether you want to respond, and then

think about what you're about to say. To assist with this, it would be beneficial to begin learning to
keep the mind quiet for a period of time each day. This can be accomplished through meditation or

simply through silent reflection. Turn off all sensory stimuli. Turn off the radio, the TV, and any
other electronic devices you're using, as well as any music you're listening to. Simply sit in silence.

Allow your thoughts to pass through you. Concentrate on your in-breath and out-breath. Maintain
silence.
