2.1 Design of the HMB-4/-8 Operating Mechanism

2.1.1 Modules of the Operating Mechanism Components
The modular design and the main components of the Operating Mechanism HMB-4
and HMB-8 are shown in Figure 2.1-1, Figure 2.1-2 and Figure 2.1-3.

The modules are:

S Charging module
S Storage module
S Working module
S Control module
S Monitoring module

The technical concept of the hydro-mechanical spring operating mechanism achieves

a compact design by combining the mechanical energy storage in disc springs and
the hydro-mechanical operating and control principles.

The force given off the disc spring assembly acts on three storage pistons. On the
storage pistons, the energy of spring force and spring travel are converted to pres-
sure and volume. The power transmission (oil column) between the high-pressure
store and the operating cylinder serves as a quickly switching changeover variator for
the CLOSE- and OPEN-operation and enables besides it a simple setting of the swit-
ching speeds by means of the throttle screws.

The operating mechanism control and the energy transmission are based on the field-
proven structural elements of the hydro-mechanical operating technology such as the
high-pressure pump, storage piston, pilot and changeover valves as well as one oper-
ating piston with an integrated end position damping.

For the HMB circuit-breaker operating mechanism, an easy-to-install and service-

friendly, modular design has been chosen, integrating the control and operating func-
tions in aluminium modules. The hydro-mechanical spring operating mechanism do
not have any pipework. All modules are interconnected by means of flanges in a
modular design.

The operating mechanism of the series HMB-4 and HMB-8 are manufactured in three
types:
1. Power Pack (Figure 2.1-1),
2. Extended Power Pack (Figure 2.1-2),
3. Operating Mechanism Assembly (Figure 2.1-3).

The hydro-mechanical operating unit “Power Pack” comprises the units charging, wor-
king, control, monitoring and storage modules. In the second type variant, the Power
Pack is completed by the extension module of the auxiliary switch and the interme-
diary housing. A position indicator, a condensation heater, a wiring and a housing pro-
tecting the operating mechanism hermetically against atmospheric influences comple-
ment the circuit-breaker operating mechanism, thus making it a complete system for
outdoor installation. The field-cabling is done with the help of plug connectors.

Product Description

2.1.2 Power Pack

The design of the operating mechanism HMB-4 and HMB-8 is characterized by a cir-
cular arrangement of the stores, charging and control modules as well as the monito-
ring modules around the working module. The low-pressure tank, the working module
and the disc spring assembly are arranged coaxially to the central axis in series
(Figure 2.1-1).

2.1.3 Extended Power Pack

The auxiliary switch, which assumes control and monitoring functions, is driven positi-
vely by the operating piston. The auxiliary switch and the pertaining kinematic trigger
unit are, in conformity with the modular design, integrated into a separate housing
(Figure 2.1-2).

2.1.4 Operating Mechanism Assembly

The housing of the operating mechanism is made of a weather-proof plastic. By loo-
sening the screw connections, both half-housings can be opened and removed from
the operating mechanism (Figure 2.1-3). The modules for control, energy storage and
charging system are easily accessible after removing the half-housings. The large-
scale operating position indicator, also positively operated by the operating piston,
enables to safely recognize the operating position.

2.1.5 Advantages of the Operating Mechanism HMB

S Compact design
S High dependability
S Maintenance-free
S Extremely low rate of wear
S Internal damping
S No temperature influence
S Very small oil quantity, in the extremely improbable accident case the operat-
ing mechanism housing accommodates the whole oil quantity
S Enhanced modular design without pipework
S Overall operating concept for puffer and auto-puffer breaker.

3.2 Storage
The operating mechanism are shipped as shipping units.

If an operating mechanism assembly is stored for a longer period (> 3 months) the
anti-condensation heating has to be mounted. As well the operating mechanism has
to be closed and the connection flange has to be covered with the transport cover
(Figure 2.1-3).

3.2.1 Packaging
If no other instructions are given, the delivered components have to stay in their orig-
inal packaging. Shipping units which are delivered in closed and undamaged wrap-
ping shall be handled with care and have to be unwrapped only when required.

Note Shipping units with damaged wrapping have to be unwrapped immediately. Damages
due to transport have to be taken down and to be reported to the responsible ABB-repre-
sentative.

3.2.2 Requirements for Storage Areas

The shipping units shall be stored in well ventilated rooms and protected against dirt,
damage, rain and intensive solar radiation.

The room air of the storage place must not be condensing or contaminated by dust,
smoke, corrosive or combustible gases, vapours or salts.

The maximum permissible ambient temperatures of the storage place

−30 through +40 degrees Celsius.

Note As to the sealing materials (i.E. O-rings), their limited shelf life shall be observed (max.
5 years after the beginning of storage).

The maximum permissible ambient temperatures of the storage place

+5 through +20 degrees Celsius.

3.3 Mounting
The mounting on the circuit-breaker shall be done according to the instructions of the
circuit-breaker manufacturer.

Note Transversal forces acting on the piston rod shall be avoided by aligned mounting and/or
the corresponding design of the operating mechanism support. Normally, the piston rod
acts on a slide bushing or by means of a connecting rod on a rotating bushing. A linear
guide is provided for the latter in order to avoid impermissible transversal forces.

3.4 Commissioning
WARNING! ALL MEASURES DESCRIBED HEREIN MUST BE CARRIED OUT ON DEAD
CIRCUIT ONLY.

Commissioning shall be carried out ONLY by personnel trained accordingly by ABB.

The commissioning protocols of the circuit-breaker concerning the operating mechan-

ism shall be observed.

Prior to the commissioning, visual checks as per Chapter 4.3 shall be performed.

WARNING! THE OPERATING MECHANISM SHALL ONLY BE OPERATED WHEN THE

CIRCUIT BREAKER IS AT LEAST FILLED WITH MINIMUM FUNCTIONAL
PRESSURE OF INSULATING GAS.

All adjustments are already factory-made and -fixed. Readjustments can be therefore
left out during the commissioning. At the commissioning, the disc spring assembly of
the operating mechanism shall be tensioned and the operating mechanism coupled
with the circuit-breaker shall be manually switched on and off several times. The
monitoring functions of the spring travel switch and the auxiliary switch shall be
checked.

Functional tests shall be performed after the completion of the commissioning work
and immediately before the start of the regular operation and after maintenance work
as well (Chapter 4.3). Functional tests may only be performed when the circuit-
breaker is disconnected from the high voltage system, there is at least blocking pres-
sure in the SF6-room and the disc springs are tensioned.

Note Prior to the first commissioning the position of the storage pistons towards the centre
holes in the centring ring shall be checked and corrected if necessary.

Note Prior to the first commissioning and after maintenance work the low pressure tank has
to be vented acc. to chapter “3.4.2 Venting the Low Pressure Tank”.

3.4.2 Venting the Low Pressure Tank

To ensure a safe suction process of the high pressure pump it is necessary to vent
the low pressure tank before first commissioning and after maintenance work. For
this, open the filling connector at the low pressure tank and charge the operating
mechanism completely (until pump OFF). After the operating mechanism has been
charged completely, check the oil level acc. to chapter “4.1.3 Oil Level” and correct if
necessary.

After inspection and correction have been carried out the filling connector at the low
pressure tank has to be sealed.

3.4.3 Manual Operation of the Operating Mechanism

It is possible to trigger the circuit-breaker by hand via the hand plungers of the pilot
valves (Figure 3.4-3). A manual triggering serves only to check the reliability perform-
ance in case of servicing or maintenance work on a dead circuit only and does not
represent any normal operational case. The circuit-breaker may only be triggered if
the disc spring assembly is tensioned and if there is at least SF6-blocking pressure in
the SF6-gas compartment of the circuit-breaker.

WARNING! IN THIS CASE THE ELECTRICAL INTERLOCKS ARE CANCELLED. THE

WARNING AND DANGER INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN CHAPTER 1 SHALL BE
IMPERATIVELY OBSERVED.

WARNING! ACCORDING TO IEC 62271-100 MANUAL OPERATION SHALL BE USED ONLY

FOR MAINTENANCE AND FOR EMERGENCY OPERATION ON A DEAD CIRCUIT.

Note Even at installation and maintenance the maximum exitation duration of the pilot valves
of 1 second over a period of 50 seconds shall not be exceeded.

3.4.4 Handling the Close-Position Interlock

General

The close-position interlock, which is installed as an option, serves as protection of

the circuit breaker in ON-position in case of a complete pressure loss by a defective
drive.

Function in Service

The close-position interlock prevents in case of a complete pressure loss in the drive
that the main contacts of the circuit breaker will open by gas forces resp. electrodyna-
mic forces or mechanical shocks.

WARNING! THE CLOSE-POSITION INTERLOCK MUST BE ACTIVATED, WHEN THE CIRCUIT

BREAKER IS IN SERVICE.

Function during Commissioning and Maintenance

The mounting of the drive, manual switching during commissioning resp. mainten-
ance or repair and also tests for protection of the switching device represent an ex-
ceptional state of operation. This may lead during activated close-position interlock to
damage of the drive resp. of the close-position interlock.

CAUTION The close-position interlock must be deactivated by withdrawing the spring plug
in all cases mentioned above. By non-observance the drive or the close-positin
interlock may be damaged.

3.4.5 Charging Module

The pump motor of the operating mechanism has been designed for a short-time
operation and is not suitable for continuous operation.

Note Even at installation and maintenance is to make sure that in a duration of 1800 seconds
the maximum permissible running time of the pump motor of 180 seconds is not
exceeded.
In case of exceeding the maximum permissible running time a sufficient cooling for the
motor shall be provided.

The carbon brushes are wear parts to replace when their length has diminished below

3.5 Optional Adjusting Procedures

3.5.1 Adjusting the Operating Speeds
The operating speeds of the operating mechanism are preset already in the factory.
A resetting or readjustment is only necessary in exceptional cases.

The operating speeds for the CLOSE- and OPEN-operation can be adjusted,
independently of each other with the throttle screws available on the control module.

CAUTION The operating speeds may only be adjusted when the disc spring assembly is
untensioned. For this operate the pressure release lever and untension the disc
spring assembly slowly by lowering the system pressure.

Loosen the locknut of the throttle screw (1 resp. 2) and adjust the operating speed by
turning the throttle screw (Figure 3.5-1). The operating speed diminishes when the
throttle screw (1 resp. 2) is turned right and increases when it is turned left.

After the adjustment retighten the locknut (3).

Operation and Maintenance

4.1 Instructions for the Operation

The chapter below contains instructions for the triggering and the operation of the
hydro-mechanical spring operating mechanism HMB-4 and HMB-8.

4.1.1 Pump Starts and Checks for Internal Tightness

The gaskets and valves used provide maximum technical tightness. Minimum leak-
ages on metallic sealing seats may bring about minimum losses of spring tension,
which are compensated by automatic pump starts.

Different operating mechanism − even from one delivery − may show statistically
caused different amounts of pump starts per day. This affects in no way the life cycle
of the operating mechanism and represents no defect.
ABB AG Up to 10 pump starts per day are permissible, even when the breaker is not triggered.
Power Technologies With more than 10 pump starts the operating mechanism shall be monitored. Upon
Kallstadter Str. 1
68309 Mannheim more than 20 pump starts per day the manufacturer shall be contacted. When deter-
Germany mining the pump start numbers, the pump starts caused by switching operations
(CLOSE or OPEN) shall be deducted from the total number of the pump starts. All
Tel: +49 (0) 621 3811212 specifications refer to the monthly average.
E-Mail: powertech@de.abb.com
Internet: www.abb.com
If the number exceeds the specified level, the leak may be localized by an extended
leakage test. For instance, internal leakage may be observed in open position only, in
close position only or in both positions at the same rate. The leak test shall be done
during a period of at least eight hours in the operating positions CLOSE and OPEN.
The test procedure is to bring the circuit-breaker into the corresponding position and
to tension the disc spring assembly. An automatic pump start shall be prevented by
disconnecting the motor supply conductors or by switching off the miniature circuit-
breakers in the motor circuit.

The following data shall be recorded in the test protocol:

− Time
− Difference of the spring travel “A”
(Measure changes as per Figure 4.1-1)

The spring tension may diminish by 30 mm per 24 hours

(with switched-off pump motor).

4.1.2 Putting Out of Service

When doing maintenance work on the operating mechanism, the circuit-breaker shall
be put out of service.

WARNING! AN AUTOMATIC START OF THE PUMP MOTOR SHALL BE PREVENTED BY

DISCONNECTING THE ELECTRICAL MOTOR CONNECTORS OR SWITCHING
OFF THE MINIATURE CIRCUIT-BREAKER.

Turn the pressure release lever (1) slowly in direction of the disc spring assembly (2)
in order to untension the disc spring assembly.

CAUTION With opened housing in the area of the disc spring assembly and movable parts
the risk of squashing is given.

4.1.3 Oil Level

The operating mechanism are filled in the factory with enough hydraulic oil. If the
hydraulic oil is visible in the oil gauge glass with a fully tensioned disc spring assem-
bly, there is enough hydraulic oil available to perform the switching operations
(Figure 4.1-3).

Used Oil brand

See chapter 6.3.

A too low oil level can be corrected by refilling via the replenishment connection as
per Figure 2.1-3.

Note Only use filtered oil (purity level ISO 4406-13/10) or use recommended tool
1HDH 114 041 R1 for filling.

CAUTION During oil filling no switching actions shall be performed.
