Afflicted Planets = दु षत हां:

In Nirayana Jyotisha (Sidereal Astrology), the term “AFFLICTED” has a wide meaning with
various effects & astrologer must know about the classic Astrology (Paramparik Jyotisha).

Afflicted Planets means "impaired" or "stricken" and usually refers to a planet that is weak by
sign or house or lordship & aspect by the malefic planets, or has been grievously affected by
placement in the Natal chart (Kundali).

As per the basic meaning of afflicted planet, those afflicted by other planets (Malefic) by way
of mutual or one way relationship / Aspect-wise (Traditional or Modern) / by sign – lordship –
particular placement in house of Kundali - Nakshatra (Constellations) – Varga kundali & Varga
Bala – Vedha – specific Degrees – combustion – retrogression – defeated in war (declination &
latitudes & perihelion - aphelion) – debilitation – over speedy or too slow in motion - then it’s
slowly lose control of their own unique results and become paralyzed or unsupportive to
Native (Jataka). Such planet loses the independent functional power to give positive or
negative result in the kundali. The influence of other planets controls such afflicted planet.

Classical reason for afflicted planet / Graha:

Afflicted situation are … an accidental debility is a negative or damaging factor that comes
from outside of the planet itself. In other words, it’s not the planet, but the planet’s
circumstances that prevent the planet from accomplishing its goals. Aspect-wise, the
accidental debilities include any aspect from a malefic planet. They are the compliment of the
essential dignities. The term essential means that the dignity or debility is associated with the
planet’s current sign placement, and therefore is integral to the nature of the planet.

(All these - affliction depends on “Law of Karma or Karma Sidhhant” of Native / Jataka.)

In Nirayana / Vedic Astrology, there are numerous rules for assessing planetary strength.

In practice, any planet can be seen as broadly favorable if their rulers are strong and not
afflicted. Boiled down to its bare essentials, the basic rules for planetary strength could be
summarized as follows:
 In brief ….

 If a planet is conjunct or aspected a benefic planet, then it's good or strong.

 If a planet is conjunct or aspected by a malefic planet, that's bad or afflicted.
 If a planet is conjunct or aspected by a planet that rules a good house, then it's
good/strong.
 If a planet is conjunct or aspected by a planet that rules a bad house, then it's
bad/afflicted.
 If a planet is placed in a good house, then it's good/strong.
 If a planet is placed in a bad house, then it's bad/afflicted. & much more…

For e.g. Basic Combinations are…

 Traditionally, Saturn was considered the greater malefic, and Mars the lesser malefic.
Now, in the scheme of things, “Nav-Pancham Yoga / Trikona Yoga” (Trine aspects) from
Saturn is going to be far less harmful than a “KENDRA YOGA” (Square aspects), but any
contact with a malefic, particularly if that malefic is in poor condition itself, spells
trouble. In a modern context, we would probably have to consider the outer planets
malefic in influence as well, although here, I’d give far more weight to the hard aspects
from the outer planets than to the easier ones.
 Close contact to the Sun is also considered to be an accidental debility. When a planet is
nearby 8° +/- degrees of arc from the Sun, it is “under the Sun’s beams” and afflicted
because the planet would no longer be visible in the sky. It is “Combust - Asta” and is
strongly debilitated because it is now being burned by the Sun. Interestingly though,
when a planet is too close from the Sun, it is “Jwalita” cazimi, or in the heart of the Sun,
which is an accidental dignity which we refer as an afflicted.
 Other accidental debilities include being placed in the 12th house (strong debility), or the
6th or 8th house (milder debility), slow in motion, conjunct the North / South Node,
besieged of Mars or Saturn.

In predictive part, afflicted planet’s result are mostly unfavorable or with hardness in nature.

e.g. Afflicted planets

Sun – Least happiness from father, governing authorities or lacking in power & position, weak
in health – eyes / heart functions / high stress etc.

Moon – Mental anxiety / depression, least happiness from mother & social relationship, poor
in creative / unique imagination & thoughts – emotions / expressions etc.
