Eighth Grade Course Selection Process

Listed below is pertinent information regarding the course selection
process. This information will be helpful whether or not you attended
the Medford High School Course Selection Night in March. Each 8th
grade student is asked to complete a course selection form no matter
where your child is attending high school. This information is essential
for the high school to plan for every possible scenario regarding
scheduling for incoming students. Thus we are aware that some
students may not attend one of the Medford Public Schools in 2011-
2012, yet we need every current 8th grade student in Medford to
complete the course selection sheet. Thank you for your cooperation in
this matter.

Timeline
Week of March 18th: Teachers began to recommend students for
standard and/or honor level courses. The teachers’ recommendations
were sent to the school’s guidance staff. Students become aware of
the recommendations during the week of 4/11.

Week of April 4th: Students will receive high school course selection
books. Students will receive this information during 8th grade guidance
classes that meet during Physical Education classes in April

Week of April 25th: Course selection forms due back to guidance staff
at AMS

Week of May 2nd: Course selection forms sent to MHS Friday May 2nd

Week of August 22nd: “Final” high school schedule sent to students

Completion of Course-Request Form

Part I: Please make sure you have four 5-credit courses checked off.

Part II: What Foreign Language will you be taking? Make sure you
have checked off one 5-credit course!

Part III: You will find Wellness and Guidance in your schedule next
year – no need to do anything.

Part IV: Do you have 4 credits checked off? It could be one 4-credit
course OR two 2-credit courses. Don’t forget to read the descriptions in
the course handbook!

Part V: Please choose at least three alternative selections from the

elective section in Part IV. Don’t forget to have your parents sign and
you sign the course selection!

LAST STEP: Turn it in by the deadline of Friday April 29th or before

please!!!

• Standard and Basic: Passing grade in English 8
• Honors: Average grade of “A” in English 8 and teacher

World History I
• All students (see page 37 in the course selection handbook)
• Honors: Average grade of “A” in Grade 8 U.S. History

Science
• All students (see page 32 in the course selection handbook)
• Introductory Physics Standard: Passing grade in Grade 8
Science
• HONORS Biology 1: A grade of “A-“ or better in grade 8
science, qualifying score on the science placement test
(administered by the 8th grade science teacher) and passing
grade in grade 8 Algebra 1.

Math
• All students (see page 23 in the course selection handbook)
• Algebra 1 Standard: Passing grade 8 Pre-algebra or grade 8
Algebra with teacher recommendation
• Geometry Standard: Passing grade in Algebra 1. Students
scoring below a C- in Algebra in grade 8 are strongly
recommended to retake Algebra in grade 9.
• Geometry Honors: A grade of “A-“ or better in Algebra 1
