TUTORIAL for CROCHETED LUCET CORD

Using a tool called a lucet, or knitting fork, to produce a strong, non-

stretching, squared braid, is an ancient technique, likely dating as far
back as the Vikings. All kind of materials can be used, thin and thick.
The fingers are used to lift the loops over each of the two fork ends.
The simple two-loop method, and the squared shape with stitches to
insert the hook into on all 4 sides, make this braid perfect for Cord Soles.
Making cord with Lucet and twine, is however hard for the fingers.
Below are two different methods to achieve the same squared cord with
one, or two, crochet hooks. The finished cord can be used for numerous
projects. For outsoles, you will need from 4 to 8 meters (13-26 Ft) finished
cord for one pair of adult soles, depending on the sole size, size of the
twine, and thickness of the finished cord.
MATERIALS
Jute or hemp twine: About 2-3 mm thick. Amount: Two 50 gram balls.
1-Hook method: 4-4.5 mm (G 6-7). 2-Hook method: 5-6 mm (H8-I9)

1. Make a loop with the twine. *Insert hook into the loop, pull up the
twine, yo, ch 1*. Repeat *-* once, two loops on the hook.
2. Push the left loop off the hook, pinch it with left hand’s fingers, yo.
3. Pull the twine through remaining loop on hook.
4. Slip the 1st loop back on hook, do not twist it, yo, pull twine through
this loop only. 2 loops on the hook.
Pull tail to close beg-loop. Repeat step 2-4 for the length needed.
2-HOOK METHOD TO MAKE A LUCET CORD
The same cord is achieved by a method using two hooks of the same size.
Note how the gray hook (H1) and the golden hook (H2), change place in
the photos, due to turning them CCW (Counterclockwise), side by side.

1. Make a yarn loop with the twine, insert H1 into the loop, pull up the twine, yo, ch 1. Insert H2 into the
beg-loop, pull tail to close the circle. Working twine turns to the left, and on top of H2, holding it in left
hand as normal for crocheting.
2. Turn both hooks CCW. Working twine is crossing on top of both hooks.
3. With H2, pull working twine through the loop on the hook.
Repeat step 2-3 for the length needed. For every loop made turn both hooks CCW. H1 and H2 will
switch places for every CCW turn.
