AIM – (a) To prepare 100ml of M/20 solution of oxalic acid.

APPARATUS AND CHEMICALS REQUIRED ' %xalic acidH

wei!hin! bottleH wei!ht boxH #olumetric flasIH funnelH distilled
waterH chemical balanceH beaIersH conical flasIH funnelH buretteH
pipetteH clamp standH tileH dilute * 2+%&H $Mn%& solution.

THEORY' (a) %xalic acid is a dicarbox"lic acid ha#in! molar

mass 12,!mol'1. -t is a primar" standard and has the molecular
formula N%%*'N%%*.2*2%. -ts eOui#alent mass is 12,/2 P ,Q as
its n factor is 2 as per the followin! reaction:
N%%*'N%%* R 2N% 2 3 2* 3 3 2e'.
Nalculation of amount of oxalic acid to be wei!hed to prepare
100ml M/20 solution:

PROCEDURE:
1. 5ei!h a clean dr" bottle usin! a chemical balance.
2. 7dd more wei!hts to the pan containin! the
wei!hts for the wei!hin! bottle.
Q. 7dd oxalic acid in small amounts to the wei!hin! bottleH so
that the pans are balanced.
&. 8emo#e the wei!hin! bottle from the pan.

9. @sin! a funnelH transfer the oxalic acid to the #olumetric

flasI.
,. 7dd a few drops of distilled w@te! to dissol#e the oxalic
acid.
Z. MaIe up the #olume to the reOuired le#el usin! distilled
w@te!.
;. The standard solution is prepared.

(b) THEORY'
1. The reaction between $Mn% & and oxalic acid is a !edo"
!e@#tio$ and the titration is therefore called a !edo"
tit!@tio$.
2. %xalic acid is the reducin! a!ent and $Mn% & is the oxidi<in!
a!ent.
Q. $Mn%& acts as an oxidi<in! a!ent in all the mediums= i.e.
acidicH basic and neutral medium.
&. $Mn%& acts as the stron!est oxidi<in! a!ent in the acidic
medium and therefore dil. *2+%& is added to the conical flasI
before startin! the titration.
9. The titration between oxalic acid and $Mn% & is a slow
reactionH therefore heat the oxalic acid solution to about ,0 0N
to increase the rate of the reaction.
