2 Leaves – Bio

Chlorophyll

• Why most leaves are green?

Because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll.

• What is the function of chlorophyll in the leaf?

Capture sun light and get energy which need for photosynthesis.

The structure of a leaf.

• Draw the leaf given in page 8 and label

• How leaves are adapted for photosynthesis?

a. Leaf in green colour – because cells contain chlorophyll
b. The veins – carry water to the cells in the leaf

Help to support the leaf and hold it out flat

Leaves are then- light can reach all the cells inside them.
Leaf stalk- attaches the leaf to the plant.

1.3 Investigating photosynthesis

• How can we prove that leaves do photosynthesis?

Easiest way is checking for the oxygen gas.

• Why is it easy to check underwater?

Because oxygen forms gas bubbles.

Activity 1.3 A
Draw the labelled diagram

1. Apparatus that we need

a. Test tube
b. Funnel
c. Beaker
2. Give two names of plants which you can use to this investigation.
a. …………………………….
b. ……………………………

3. What is the best place to leave your apparatus and why?

• How do you check oxygen?
When we put the just glowing wooden splint, it will burst into a flame if the gas is oxygen.

Activity 1.3B

Investigating the rate of photosynthesis.

Is there any correlation between light intensity and photosynthesis?

How to check?

a. You can take two set ups like we used in the previous investigation.
b. Change the light intensity that each sample gets.
(Can place a lamp near the set up to give more light intensity. Keep the lamp further the set
up to give less light intensity)
c. Collect gas into the test tubes and compare.
d. We can use two methods
i. Check the depth of the gas collected in the test tubes during a certain time period.
ii. Count the number of air bubbles during a certain time period. (Quickest way)
e. Record you results in a table
Number of bubbles (10 min)
With high light intensity 15
With less light intensity 10
