A weight Q is suspended from point B of a cord ABC, the end of which are pulled by equal
weights P overhanging small pulleys A and C which are on the same level as shown in fig-1.
Neglecting the redii of the pulleys, determine the sag BD if l=3.66m, P=89 N and Q= 44.5
N.
2. Two identical rollers each of weight Q= 445 N are supported by an inclined plane and a
vertical wall as shown in fig-2. Assuming smooth surface, find the reactions induced at the
points of support A, B and C.
3. In fig-3, weights P and Q are suspended in a vertical plane by string 1, 2, 3 arranged as
shown. Find the tension induced in each string if P=2225 N and Q=4450 N.
4. A prismatic bar AB of weight W=632.3 N and length l=2.44 m is hinged to a vertical wall at
point A and supported at its other end B by a horizontal strut BC as shown in Fig-4. Find the
compressive force S induced in the strut and the reaction Ra at A if α =25o
5. Two blocks of weight W1 and W2 rest on a rough inclined plane and are connected by a
short piece of string as shown in fig-5. If the coefficient of friction are µ 1=0.2 and µ2= 0.3
respectably, find the inclination of the plane for which sliding will impend. Assume
W1=W2=22.25 N.
6. Determine the centroid of an area of one-quarter of an ellipse with major and minor
semiaxes ‘a’ and ‘b’ respectably.

8. Find The CG of the shaded area as shown in Fig-7.
9. A roller of radius r=304.8 mm and weight Q=2225 N is to be pulled over a curb of height
h=152.4 mm by a horizontal force P applied to the end of a string wound around the
circumference of the roller as shown in fig-8. Find the magnitude of P required to start the
roller over the curb.
10. A heavy rotating drum of radius r is supported in bearing at C and is braked by the device as
shown in fig-9. Calculate the braking moment Mc with respect to point C if the coefficient of
kinetic friction between drum and brake show is µ.
