4 Service Data Point/Extended Database (SDP/EDB)

INTRODUCTION
Ericsson is committed to being a leader in the deployment of the
Intelligent Network (IN) throughout the world. The idea of
adding extended database capabilities to the network is the next
step in achieving that goal.

The Service Data Point (SDP) and the Extended DataBase

(EDB) systems were created to allow telephony systems a means
of storing a large amount of customer-related data in a format
that is simple and accessible.

The SDP/EDB platform works as a companion database for the

AXE Service Control Point (SCP). It is capable of storing a
tremendous amount of data, thus expanding the data storage
capacity of the SCP.

The SDP/EDB system is implemented in a Hewlett Packard

UNIX-based computer. Operator interface to the platform is via
the Service Management Application System (SMAS).

NETWORK OVERVIEW

INTRODUCTION
The SDP/EDB network has three major network elements:

• SCP - Executes the service scripts. All the services and

control types are stored in the SCP. Some data is also stored
in the SCP.
• SDP/EDB - Large storage unit for customer data. The
SDP/EDB will be discussed in general next.
• SMAS - Graphical interface which utilizes object oriented
programming for the creation and management of service
scripts.

The main difference between the SDP and the EDB is the type
of communications connection it shares with the SCP. In the
case of the SDP, the connection towards the SCP is
accomplished with an SS7 link. The EDB is connected to the
SCP is with an Ethernet link.

In the US the EDB is with the SCP connected via an

InterWorking Unit (IWU)

PREREQUISITES
For the SDP/EDB to be useable, the network must include a
version of SMAS that supports the UNIX SDP/EDB. The
network must also include an SCP configured to support the
UNIX SDP/EDB.
