INTRODUCTION
Since their creation in the early 1980s, Intelligent Networks
(INs) and Mobile Intelligent Networks (MINs) have become
major factors for operators world-wide. However, they are still
young. Over the next 10 years, it is predicted by some that INs
and MINs will grow to become the largest source of income for
operators who use it.
BROADBAND IN (BIN)
Broadband technologies are a major trend in
telecommunications. With broadband technologies such as
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), it will be possible to
create advanced interactive telecommunications services which,
up till now, have been an impossibility in present
telecommunications networks because of insufficient
bandwidth. It is expected that IN will incorporate ATM
switching technology to form Broadband IN (BIN). This could
lead to MIN services involving large data transfers.
DECENTRALIZED INTELLIGENCE
It is foreseen that future implementation of IN (and naturally
MIN) may be based on a model with less centralized
intelligence. This “flexible intelligence allocation” will consist
of the total management of centralized services in SCPs and
distributed services in local switches or exchanges. Centralized
management can be achieved by adopting and implementing the
Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) architecture
within IN architecture. The distributed services can be ones
which are more directly associated with a subscriber line, such
as call completion to busy subscriber and calling line
identification.
INTELLIGENCE ON DEMAND
Further into the future, it may be possible to retrieve logic or
intelligence wherever and whenever it is needed. This scenario
envisions the integration of fixed, broadband and mobile
networks into seamless telecommunications networks, the
consequences being full featured Personal Communications
Network (PCN) architectures.
