Prelim Exam
Name: ____________________________ Grade & Section:___________
Teacher: ___________________________ Date:_______
Test I: Identification (2pts each)
_______1. It is consist of the values a random variable can assume and the corresponding probabilities of the
values.
_______2. It is a list of all the possible outcomes of a random variable along with the corresponding probability
values.
_______3. A branch of applied mathematics concerned with collecting, organizing, and interpreting data.
_______4. The difference between the largest and the smallest value in the data set.
_______5. To get the ____, identify which value in the data set occurs most often.
_______6. To get the ____, identify which value appears in the middle of the list.
_______7. To get the ____, add up the values in the data set and then divide by the number of the values that
you added.
_______8. The chance that something will happen.
_______9. A function that associates a real number to each element in the sample space.
_______10. The set of all possible outcomes of an experiment.

Test II: Classify the following whether Discrete or Continuous random variable.
Write “love” if it is Discrete and “crush” if it is Continuous.
________1. The number of defective computers produced by the manufacturer.
________2. The weight of newborns each year in a hospital.
________3. The number of siblings in a family of a region.
________4. The time needed to finish the test.
________5. The number of people who are playing LOTTO.
________6. The amount of sugar in a cup of coffee.
________7. The distance between Salawagan and Quezon.
________8. The number of accidents per year at an intersection.
________9. The air pressure of the tire of a bicycle.
________10. The duration of the next outgoing cell phone call.

Test III. Answer the following questions. (5pts each) Write your answers at the back of your paper.

A. Find the values of the following.

1. Four coins are tossed. Let Z be the random variable representing the number of heads that occur. Find the
values of the random variable Z.

B. Find the Probability Distribution and draw the histograph.

1. A family has three children. Let X be the number of boys. Construct a probability distribution for the random
variable X.

2. Suppose three cell phones are tested at random. Let D represent the defective cell phones and let N represent
the non-defective cell phones. If we let X be the random variable for the number of defective cell phones,
construct the probability distribution of the random variable X.

C. Compute the Mean of the Probability Distribution

1. The probabilities that a surgeon operates on 3,4,5,6 or 7 patients in any day are 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.20 and
0.20, respectively. Find the average number of patients that a surgeon operates on a day.

2. Find the mean of the probability distribution of the random variable X, which can take only the values 1,2
and 3, given that P(3)= 10 , P(5)= 1 , and P(7)= 12 . D. Get the Range:__________
