TUTORIAL No. 1- Fluid Properties

1 Calculate the specific weight, specific mass, specific volume, and specific gravity of a
reservoir containing glycerine which has a mass of 1100kg and a volume of 0.9 m3

2 A one litre of a certain liquid weighs 7N. Calculate specific weight, density, and specific
gravity of the liquid.

3 Determine the mass density, specific weight, and specific volume of a liquid whose
specific gravity is 0.85

4 The space between two parallel plates

5 mm apart is filled with crude oil
(Figure 1.1). A force of 2N is required
to drag the upper plate at a constant
velocity 0.8m/s. The lower plate is
stationary. The area of the upper plate
is 0.09m2. Determine the dynamic
viscosity and kinematic viscosity of
the oil, if the specific gravity of the oil Figure 1.1
is 0.9.

5 A flat plate weighing 0.45kN has an

area of 0.1m2. It slides down an
inclined plane at 30° to horizontal
(Figure 1. 2) at a constant speed of
3m/s. If the inclined plane is lubricated
with an oil of viscosity 0.1 Ns/m2, find
the thickness of the film.

6 A liquid compressed in a cylinder has a volume of 1000cm 3 at 1 MN/m2 and a volume of

995cm3 at 2 MN/m3. What is the bulk modulus of elasticity?

7 When the pressure of liquid is increased from 3 MN/m 2 to 6.0 MN/m2, its volume is
decreased by 0.1%. What is the bulk modulus of elasticity of the liquid?
