PART B

1. What are the units of mass density, specific weight, dynamic viscosity and kinematic
viscosity in SI units.
2. Calculate the density, specific weight and weight of one litre if petrol of specific gravity
0.7
3. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of an oil, which is used for lubrication between a square
plate of size 0.8m*0.8m and an inclined plane with angle of inclination 30 o . The weight
of the square plate is 300N and it slides down the inclined plane with a uniform velocity
of 0.3 m/s. The thickness of oil film is 1.5mm.
4. A plate having an area of 0.6m2 is sliding down the inclined plane at 30 o to the horizontal
with a velocity of 0.36m/s. There is a cushion of fluid 1.8mm thick between the plane and
the plate. Find the viscosity of the fluid if the weight of the plate is 280N.
5. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side of the plate
is 60cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5mm. The upper plate, which moves at 2.5m/s
requires a force of 98.1N to maintain the speed. Determine:
i) The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise, and
ii) The kinematic viscosity of the oil in stokes if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95
6. A 400mm diameter shaft is rotating at 200 rpm in a bearing of length 120mm. If the
thickness of oil film is 1.5mm and the dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.7 Ns/m2.
Determine the torque required to overcome friction in bearing and power utilized in
overcoming viscous resistance. Assume a linear velocity profile.
7. An oil of viscosity 5 poise is used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve. The
diameter of the shaft is 0.5m and it rotates at 200 rpm. Calculate the power lost in oil for
a sleeve length of 100 mm. The thickness of oil film is 1mm
8. The velocity distribution for flow over a plate is given by u=2y-y2. Where u is the
velocity in m/s at a distance y metre above the plate. Determine the velocity gradient and
shear stress at the boundary and 0.15m from it.
9. A vertical gap 2.2mcm wide of infinite extent contains a fluid of viscosity 2Ns/m2 and
specific gravity 0.9. A metallic plate 1.2m*1.2m*0.2m is to be lifted up with a constant
velocity of 0.15m/s through the gap. If the plate is in the middle of the gap, find the force
required. The weight of the plate is 40N.
10. Calculate the capillary effect in millimetres in a glass tube of 4mm diametre, when
immersed in (i) water (ii) mercury. The temperature of the liquid is 20o C and the values
of the surface tension of water and mercury at 20o C in contact with air are 0.073575 N/m
and 0.51 N/m respectively. The angle of contact for water is zero that for mercury 130 o .
Take density of water as 998 kg/m3 at 20o C.
11. A hydraulic press has a ram of 20cm diameter and a plunger of 3cm diameter. It is used
for lifting a weight of 30kN. Find the force required at the plunger.

12. A rectangular wooden block is 5m long, 3m wide and 1.2m high. The depth of immersion
of the wooden block is 0.8m in sea water. If the centre of gravity is 0.6m above the
bottom of the wooden block, determine the meta-centric height. The density for sea water
is 1025kg/m3
13. A block of wood of specific gravity 0.7 floats in water. Determine the meta-centric height
of the block if its size is 2m*1m*0.8m
14. Derive an expression to find the distance of centre of pressure from the free surface of
liquid of an vertical plane surface submerged in the liquid.
15. Derive an expression to find the distance of centre of pressure from the free surface of
liquid of an inclined plane surface submerged in the liquid.

body which weighs 4.5N in water and 6N in oil of specific gravity 0.8. Find the volume
and weight of the body. Also find the density and specific gravity of the material of the
body.
19. A tank contains water upto a height of 0.5m above the base. An immiscible liquid of
specific gravity 0.8 filled on the top of water upto 1m height. Calculate the Total pressure
on one side of the tank. The position of centre of pressure for one side of the tank, which
is 2m wide.
20. A trapezoidal channel 2m wide at the bottom and 1m deep has side slopes 1:1. Determine
the total pressure and centre of pressure.
21. A vertical sluice gate 4m wide and 2m deep is hinged at the top. A liquid of specific
gravity 1.5 stands on the upstream side of the gate upto a height of 3.5m above the top
edge of the gate and water on the downstream side upto the top edge of the gate. Find the
resultant pressure acting on the gate and the point at which the resultant pressure acts.
22. A vertical sluice gate is used to cover an opening in a dam. The opening is 2 m wide and
1.2m high. On the upstream of the gate, the liquid of specific gravity 1.45, lies up to a
height of 1.5m above the top of the gate, whereas on the downstream side the water is
available up to a height touching the top of the gate. Find the resultant force acting on the
gate and position of centre of pressure. Find also the force acting horizontally at the top
of the gate which is capable of opening it. Assume the gate is hinged at the bottom.
23. A circular plate 3m diameter is immersed in water in such a way that its greatest and least
depth below the free surface are 4m and 1.5m respectively. Determine the total pressure
on one face of the plate and position of the centre of pressure.
