Viscosity
1. A plate 0.05mm distant from a fixed plate moves at 1.2 ms -1
and requires a force of 2.2 N/m2 to maintain this speed. Find
the viscosity of the fluid between the plates.
2. A plate having an area of 0.6m2 is sliding down the inclined
plane at 300 to the horizontal with a velocity of 0.36 ms -1 .
There is a cushion of fluid 1.8mm thick between the plane
and the plate. Find the viscosity of the fluid if the weight of
the plate is 280 N.
3. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled
with oil. Each side of the plate is 720mm. The thickness of
the oil film is 15mm. The upper plate, which moves at 3ms -1
requires a force of 120 N to maintain the speed. Determine;
I. The dynamic viscosity of the oil
II. The kinematic viscosity of oil if the specific gravity of
oil is 0.95

Capillarity
1 A clean tube of diameter 2.5mm is immersed in a liquid with
a coefficient of surface tension = 0.4 N/m. The angle of
contact of the liquid with the glass can be assumed to be
1350 . The density of the liquid = 13,600 kgm -3. What would

be the level of the liquid in the tube relative to the free

surface of the liquid inside the tube?

Assuming that the interstices in a clay are of size equal to

one tenth the mean diameter of the grain, estimate the
height to which water will rise in a clay soil of average grain
diameter of 0.048mm. Assume surface tension at air-water
interface as 0.074 N/m.

Calculate the work done in blowing a soap bubble of

diameter 100mm. Assume the surface tension of soap
solution is 0.038 N/m.

Determine the minimum size of glass tubing that can used

to measure water level, if the capillarity rise in the tube is
not exceed 0.3mm. Take surface tension of water in contact
with air as 0.0735 N/m.

A U-tube is made up of two capillaries of bores 1.2m and

2.4mm respectively. The tube is held vertical and partially
filled with liquid of surface tension 0.06N/m and zero contact
angle. If the estimated difference in the level of two menisci
is 15mm, determine the mass density of the liquid.
