Assignment-1:
Fluid Properties and Pressure Measurements
Hydrostatic Forces and Buoyancy & Flotation

1. An oil of sp. gr. 0.8 is contained in vessel. At a point the height of an oil is 20
m. Find the corresponding height of water at that point.
2. An oil film of thickness 1.5 mm is used for lubrication between a square plate of
size 0.9m X 0.9 m and an inclined plane having an angle of inclination 20
degree. The weight of the square is 392.4 N and it slides down the plate with a
uniform velocity of 0.2 m/s. find the dynamic viscosity of the oil.
3. Two plates are placed at a distance of 0.15 mm apart. The lower plate is fixed
while the upper plate having surface area 1.0 m2 is pulled at 0.3 m/s. Find
the force and power required to maintain this speed. If the fluid separating
them having viscosity 1.5 poise.

4. In a steam of glycerin in motion at a certain point the velocity gradient is 0.25

meter per sec per meter. The mass density of fluid is 1268.4 Kg per cubic
meter and kinematic viscosity is 6.3 X 10-4 square meter per second. Calculate
the shear stress at point.
5. A U-tube having a 5mm x 5mm square c/s filled with mercury up to a height of
20cm in each limb (open to the atmosphere). If 5 cm3 of water is added to the
right limb, what will be the new height of mercury in the left limb.
6. Determine the gauge and absolute pressure at point which is 2.0 m below the
free surface of water. Take atmospheric pressure as 10.1043 N/cm2.
7. The container is partially filled with oil, water and air as shown in Figure 1.
Determine the pressure at A, B, and C. Take ρo 730 kg/m3.

8. A jet of water has a diameter of 0.2 cm. the absolute surface tension of water is
0.072N/m and atmospheric pressure is 101.2kN/m2. What will be the absolute
pressure within the jet of water.
9. A simple manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil (sp.gr. =0.8) flowing in
the pipe line. Its right limb is open to the atmosphere and lift limb is connected to
the pipe. The center of pipe is 9 cm below the level of mercury (sp.gr. 13.6) in the
right limb. If the difference of mercury in two limb is 15 cm, determine the
absolute pressure of oil in the pipe in N/cm2

10. A glass tube of 2.5mm internal diameter is immersed in oil of mass density 940
kg/m3 to a depth of 9 mm. if a pressure of 148 N/m2 is needed to form a
bubble which is just released, what is the surface tension of oil?

11. Figure 2 shows an inverted differential manometer connected to two pipes A and
B containing water. The fluid is manometer is oil of sp.gr. 0.8. for the manometer
readings shown in the figure. Find the difference of pressure head between A and
B.
12. A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B as shown in
Figure 3 below at B air pressure is p N/cm2 (abs.), find the absolute pressure at
point A.

15. A tank contains water upto a height ot 1 m above the base. An immiscible
liquid of sp. gr. 0.8 is filled on the top of water upto 1.5 m height. Calculate: (i)
total pressure on one side of the tank, (ii) the position of centre of pressure
for one side of the tank, which is 3 m wide.

16. Determine the total pressure and center of pressure on an isosceles triangular
