CLASSWORK #3: PROBLEM SET

Instructions: Solve the following problems on a separate sheet following the template guidelines
provided. Write completely and legibly (preferably engineering lettering) all solutions. Use at least three
(3) decimal places for the computation and enclose in a box the final answers with the appropriate units.
Deductions will be applied for not following instructions. Anyone found to be violating the academic
policies related to conducting tests and examinations shall be given the failing grade and necessary
university sanctions.

1. A fluid that occupies a volume of 24 L weighs 225 N at a location where the gravitational acceleration is
9.80 m/s2 . Determine the mass of this fluid and its density.
2. A cylindrical tank of methanol has a mass of 60 kg and a volume of 75 L. Determine the methanol’s
weight, density, and specific gravity. Take the gravitational acceleration to be 9.81 m/s2 . Also, estimate
how much force is needed to accelerate this tank linearly at 0.25 m/s2 .
3. The container is filled with water at a temperature of 25°C and a depth of 2.5 m. If the container has a
mass of 30 kg, determine the combined weight of the container and the water.
4. Determine the mass of carbon tetrachloride that should be mixed with 80 kg of glycerin so that the
combined mixture has a density of 1450 kg/m3 .
5. A pump is used to transport water to a higher reservoir. If the water temperature is 20°C, determine the
lowest pressure that can exist in the pump without cavitation.
6. Saturated water vapor at 150°C (enthalpy h = 2745.9 kJ/kg) flows in a pipe at 35 m/s at an elevation of z
= 25 m. Determine the total energy of vapor in J/kg relative to the ground level.
7. The tank contains air at a temperature of 18°C and an absolute pressure of 160 kPa. If the volume of the
tank is 3.48 m3 and the temperature rises to 42°C, determine the mass of air that must be removed from
the tank to maintain the same pressure.
8. The density of seawater at a free surface where the pressure is 98 kPa is approximately 1030 kg/m3 .
Taking the bulk modulus of elasticity of seawater to be 2.34 × 109 N/m2 and expressing variation of
pressure with depth z as dP = 𝜌g dz determine the density and pressure at a depth of 2500 m. Disregard
the effect of temperature.
9. Water in the swimming pool has a measured depth of 3.03 m when the temperature is 5°C. Determine its
approximate depth when the temperature becomes 35°C. Neglect losses due to evaporation.
10. Nitrogen enters a steady-flow heat exchanger at 150 kPa, 10°C, and 100 m/s, and it receives heat in the
amount of 120 kJ/kg as it flows through it. Nitrogen leaves the heat exchanger at 100 kPa with a velocity
of 200 m/s. Determine the Mach number of the nitrogen at the inlet and the exit of the heat exchanger.
11. The viscosity of a fluid is to be measured by a viscometer constructed of two 75-cm-long concentric
cylinders. The outer diameter of the inner cylinder is 15 cm, and the gap between the two cylinders is 1
mm. The inner cylinder is rotated at 300 rpm, and the torque is measured to be 0.8 N·m. Determine the
viscosity of the fluid.
12. A 50-cm × 30-cm × 20-cm block weighing 150 N is to be moved at a constant velocity of 1.10 m/s on an
inclined surface with a friction coefficient of 0.27. (a) Determine the force F that needs to be applied in
the horizontal direction. (b) If a 0.40-mm-thick oil film with a dynamic viscosity of 0.012 Pa⋅s is applied
between the block and inclined surface, determine the percent reduction in the required force.
13. A thin plate moves between two parallel, horizontal, stationary flat surfaces at a constant velocity of 5
m/s. The two stationary surfaces are spaced 4 cm apart, and the medium between them is filled with oil
whose viscosity is 0.9 N⋅s/m2 . The part of the plate immersed in oil at any given time is 2-m long and
0.5-m wide. If the plate moves through the mid-plane between the surfaces, determine the force required
to maintain this motion. What would your response be if the plate was 1 cm from the bottom surface (h2)
and 3 cm from the top surface (h1)?
14. If the kinematic viscosity of glycerin is ν = 1.15(10-3 ) m2 /s, determine its viscosity. At the temperature
considered, glycerin has a specific gravity of Sg = 1.26.
15. If a force of P = 2 N causes the 30-mm-diameter shaft to slide along the lubricated bearing with a constant
speed of 0.5 m/s, determine the viscosity of the lubricant and the constant speed of the shaft when P = 8
N. Assume the lubricant is a Newtonian fluid and the velocity profile between the shaft and the bearing is
linear. The gap between the bearing and the shaft is 1 mm.
16. The Newtonian fluid is confined between a plate and a fixed surface. If its velocity profile is defined by u
= (8y – 0.3y 2 ) mm/s, where y is in mm, determine the shear stress that the fluid exerts on the plate and
on the fixed surface. Take μ = 0.482 N ∙ s/m2 .
17. The tube rests on a 1.5-mm thin film of oil having a viscosity of μ = 0.0586 N ∙ s/m2 . If the tube is
rotating at a constant angular velocity of ω = 4.5 rad/s, determine the shear stress in the oil at r = 40 mm
and r = 80 mm. Assume the velocity profile within the oil is linear.
18. Consider a 0.15-mm diameter air bubble in a liquid. Determine the pressure difference between the inside
and outside of the air bubble if the surface tension at the air-liquid interface is (a) 0.080 N/m and (b) 0.12
N/m.
19. A capillary tube of 1.2 mm diameter is immersed vertically in water exposed to the atmosphere.
Determine how high water will rise in the tube. Take the contact angle at the inner wall of the tube to be
6° and the surface tension to be 1.00 N/m.
20. The marine water strider, Halobates, has a mass of 0.36 g. If it has six slender legs, determine the
minimum contact length of all of its legs combined to support itself in water having a temperature of T =
20°C. Take σ = 72.7 mN/m, and assume the legs to be thin cylinders with a contact angle of θ = 0°.
