GATE EEE is a national exam conducted once every year. It is one of the most sought
after exams for students from the IITs and NITs as it offers a post-graduation course.
However, it is to be noted not only does GATE offer a postgraduate course, over 200
Public Sector Undertakings consider GATE scores and even offer a stipend on a
monthly basis to the students pursuing an M.Tech. course. This is what makes GATE
EEE one of the most competitive exams for engineering students.
Students, therefore face one of the most common yet difficult questions, ‘How do I
prepare for GATE EEE?’ The answer to this is quite simple and if you are determined,
you can easily clear GATE with ease.
Follow these simple steps as you follow your daily routine and there is just no looking
back.
You may often read about articles stating how to prepare for GATE in XYZ months but
honestly, time waits for none. It's always best to start early. The best time to begin is
the third year of engineering. Waiting for the last few months will only increase stress.
The most important step to clear GATE is to know the syllabus; understand how the
paper covers different topics, understand weightage of each topic, the marking system
used for different questions, etc. GATE covers these 10 topics:
Engineering Mathematics
Electric Circuits
Electric Machines
Electromagnetic Fields
Control Systems
Power Systems
Power Electronics
Knowing the syllabus helps you to identify your strengths and weaknesses. This in turn
will help you to distribute your time and effort more effectively.
Engineering Mathematics
Being well versed with the syllabus will enable you to understand that the engineering
mathematics section is a mandatory section and weighs approximately 12-18% of the
total paper. The topics covered under Engineering Mathematics are:
Differential Equations
Calculus
Linear Algebra
Transform Theory
Numerical Methods
Complex Variables
There is a pool of content available to scour. However, what may be perfect for one,
may not be even close to perfection for another. The perfect book can be the one
where the language is more comprehensible or which provides some tips and tricks or
simply because a student is more comfortable with the writing style of the author. The
choice is yours to make.

Prepare Notes
As old school as it may seem, preparing your notes is the best practice. Making your
notes helps you to retain what has been learned more effectively. Make flow charts
include formulas and synopsis of topics, prepare diagrams, etc.
Test Yourself
Lastly, test your knowledge after every topic. Testbook offers quizzes based on topics,
level of difficulty, weightage, etc. Once confident of finishing the GATE EEE syllabus,
take video lectures available online, attempt previous year papers and test series too
as they help in understanding time management. These services are offered by
Testbook too.

I am a 3rd year B.E. in EEE student. How can I prepare for the GATE? What are the
books I should refer to for all subjects?
How many months of preparation are required to clear the GATE exam in EEE?
What are the best books for GATE (EEE) and when is right time for preparing?
2. Short but tricky method: You may be in final year/job /taking year off- you
can still crack Gate. But this time your strategy should be different. You
simply dont have time for the conventional method of reading from
textbooks for preparation. You need coaching or atleast study material. This
will give you direction and enable you to complete in the shortest possible
time.
I myself was more oriented towards the first method(though not 100%). But I have
seen more number of people successful through the second method. So, both
methods work. Choose one according to you!
Once you decide how your preparation is going to be, the next isue is feeling
demotivated midway through preparation. You may forget concepts read previously,
you may fear of there is enough time…All this is very natural. Remember to just keep
going!
These two are something you cannot dream of ignoring. From around Nov-Dec, this
should be your main focus rather than reading new concepts.

Person targeting for GATE should have strong determination and affection towards
the subject. I belong to EEE and a person of EEE unless he loves the subject he cant
get a grip over the topics.
Coming to the preparation one should be very clear of the basics and as we write the
GATE at least after completing the Bachelors, I expect here that, one will be clear with
all fundamentals and if you aren’t then the first thing you should learn is basics.
I was not pretty much interested in the GATE exam but my family wanted me to
attempt so I did, but I was in great love with my subjects so I was a bit clear on the
fundamentals.
Though I was not interested in GATE I was interested in the subjects so I used to
concentrate on the GATE classes and I used the class time properly. I went for ACE
classes and the faculty there had a great dedication towards the subject. Their
teaching made me get more interest to concentrate on the topics. I used to solve all
the problems given in the class on my own at the same time I solved the problem -
books provided by them. And then I had a look over the previous year papers. I
observed that if a person concentrates more on the problem based subjects like
Digital, Analog Electronics, Control Systems, Circuit Theory, Measurements,

First of all, ask yourself whether you are ready to fight till the very end. Every year
lakhs of engineering graduates come into this rat race, either by quitting their job or
taking a year drop or compromising their final year campus placements. As per my
observation, for every 100 aspirants who come into this race, hardly 2 to 3 are well
settled in their dream PSU or dream IIT/IISC. Once you have decided to take part in
this race, just know one reality:

What is the time required for each subject in the GATE EEE?
I personally feel having a good mentor/coaching centre will give you a good start to
your preparation.
Having a good gate oriented class notes and problem set will help to revise the
concepts and subject on regular basis.
Since, gate is mathematical oriented exam , practising more models of questions will
help us improve problem solving capability.

For preparation of GATE without joining any coaching will demand more time and
determination from you. As in coaching you will study only those topics which are
relevent for GATE and that too in a concise manner.
For self preparation you will be required to first create base and understand the
concepts through the standard books then you can go for some coaching materials.
After you have prepared that you can certainly

This obsession will keep you motivated and will decide the extent to which you can go
to fulfill your dreams. So, you must contemplate on what you would like to do with a

Now according to me first one is the best. Coaching will be helpful only when your

If you start preparing for GATE after studying the above subjects, I am pretty sure you
will be able to understand difficult subjects with less dificulty and in less time.
P.S- You dont have to be an expert in above topics. Just have a decent understanding.

Every student who prepares for any given exam has his/her own individual strategy
