The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
Summit Entertainment
"When you're a teenager you meet people who seem like they'll always be
in your life – but they won't and that's okay. It was comforting to watch at 17,
and it really resonated."

Legally Blonde (2001)
"It’s not just Elle’s determination that's admirable, but that she's kind to
everyone – even to those are awful to her. She isn't a pushover, and she
never changed who she was to get to the top."

Columbia Pictures
"The movie tells of a group of kids who are all different from one another
and struggle in different ways. It shows a good mix of fate and self-
determination, and that friendships may not last forever, yet the length of a
friendship doesn't determine the strength of the friendship when it's active."

13 Going on 30 (2004)
"As kids we all wish we could grow up and be adults and do the things we'd
always wanted to do, but this movie showed me that not everything is easier
just because you've grown up. It showed me that the future is really in our
hands, and that nothing is impossible!"

Boyz n the Hood (1991)
Columbia Pictures
"I realised I need to be aware of the suffering and wrong in the world, even
if it stresses me out, because knowing means maybe I can do something to
change it. Choosing not to know is choosing not to care: if I turn a blind eye,
I contribute to the problem."

Sony Pictures Releasing
"The movie beautifully shows Liz’s adventures and the life-changing journey
she goes through. Putting herself first after being so hurt, stopping
everything to get the life that she wants – but in such a kind, wise, and
genuine way. It really made me feel like with that attitude, the world could
be a warmer place."

Spirited Away (2001)
Studio Ghibli
"Spirited Away is such a beautiful movie, and its message still sits with me
today. It not only gave me a fierce young female lead that I could relate to,
but also taught me the importance of identity and what makes you, you!"

"Apart from the inevitable sexual awakening, it showed me that you can and
should change, and that you are in control of your own life. It's up to you to
make the right choices, even if it's tempting to take the easy path instead."

"It taught me a lot about love and the different kinds of love we experience
through life. Forrest loved so many people in his life – his lifelong friend
Jenny, his mother, his friends Bubba, and Lieutenant Dan. He loved and
cared for them all so strongly in completely different ways, and he was
never afraid to show how he felt."

"It changed my viewpoint on sex work and stripping. These women screwed
over the men that had seen them as just a vagina and not a real person with
real feelings. It was an incredibly clever movie and had great acting."

"Georgia learns to speak up for herself, and lives each day as if she’s going
to die. She isn't afraid to be herself, and takes all the risks she wouldn’t have
before. It made me so grateful for each day that I’m alive."

"Love, Rosie taught me the value of being honest with your feelings for
someone. If you like someone, you better tell them right away, 'cause if you
get rejected, at least you'd have your answer already and can start the
process of moving on, rather than thinking of what could have been."

Beautiful Thing (1996)
"As a gay boy coming out in 2001, I idolised the kind of romance that the
two main characters found with each other, while also coming out! It’s one

gave me hope."

"I didn't realise until I watched Marrowbone, that I had never actually
accepted my brother's death. When he died I sort of shut it down and

death, which allowed me to move on for real."

I know it's really easy to judge a list like this based on your own personal
viewpoint of a movie, but we shouldn't dismiss or discount someone else's
emotional/transformative moments. It meant something to them, in a specific
moment or way. That in itself has value.

I am a little bit Hispanic and the movie Coco made me really want to learn
more and get in touch with that part of my heritage. I'm also blond and don't
want to get accused of cultural appropriation, even though there is definite
dna evidence.
