2
What is Industrial Hygiene?

Industrial hygienists are scientists and engineers committed to

protecting the health and safety of people in the workplace
and the community. The industrial hygienist is part of a
broader family of professionals often referred to collectively as
the practice of occupational and environmental health and
safety.

The goal of the industrial hygienist is to keep workers,

their families, and the community healthy and safe. They
play a vital part in ensuring that federal, state, and local
laws and regulations are followed in the work
environment.

What is Industrial Hygiene?

Four phases in an industrial

hygiene project
1. Anticipation
2. Identification
3. Evaluation
4. Control
What is Industrial Hygiene?
In chemical plant and laboratories, the
industrial hygienist

• identifies and evaluates hazards;

• makes recommendations relevant to control
techniques;
• works closely with safety professionals as an
integral part of a safety and loss prevention
program;
• ensures (together with safety and plant
operation personnel) control measures are
applied and maintained

Anticipation
One of the major responsibilities of the IH is to anticipate, identify, and solve
potential health problems within plants.

expectation of the

hazards and efforts of IHs, process

laboratory personnel and
management.

7
Identification All potential hazards in a chemical plant must be identified and controlled.

Requires a thorough study of:
