“Role of MRI in Evaluation of Spinal Trauma and

Role of Multidetector Computed Tomography in Bowel Lesions”

MRI or known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a type of scan that used for
medical imaging procedures. An american physician and a medical practitioner,
Raymond Vahan Damadian who was an inventor of the first Magnetic Resonance
Scanning machine. Based on my research, According to affordablemri.com Damadian’s
research into sodium and potassium in living cells led him to his first experiments with
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) which caused him to first propose the MR body
scanner in 1969.

MRI is like to help diagnose a variety of conditions or problems. A large MRI

machines are mostly to be use and tube-shaped magnets. It is to produce detailed or clear
images of organs and other internal structural body. MRI is very useful for examining
specially in the spinal cord abnormalities.

According to Ayush Gupta, Rajasbala Dhande, Diagnostic imaging particularly

magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in evaluating and detecting spinal
trauma. Subtle bone marrow,soft-tissue,and spinal cord abnormalities, which may not be
apparent on other imaging modalities, can be readily detected on MRI. Early detection
often leads to prompt and accurate diagnosis, expeditious management, and avoidance of
unnecessary procedures. Most of the diagnostic information in spinal trauma is derived
from the sagittal images. As MRI is an excellent diagnostic modality for the evaluation of
spinal trauma, it is possible to suggest that the MRI findings correlated directly with the
degree of deficit according to the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA)
impairment scale. The purpose of this study is to evaluate this correlation.

According to By Michael C. Hollingshead, MD, and Mauricio Castillo, MD,

FACR., Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows the radiologist to directly evaluate all
of the soft tissues of the spine, including the ligaments, cord, disks, and vasculature.
Thus, it can be crucial in the evaluation of the trauma patient with ligamentous injury and
possible instability.MRI allows for direct visualization and confirmation. This article will
review the use of MRI in acute spinal trauma.MRI allows the evaluation of the spinal
cord. The cord may be directly damaged by a traumatic event or by impingement because
of an associated injury, such as a herniated disk. MRI can identify the level of cord injury
and the associated soft tissue injuries. Because of this, it can assist in operative planning.
