B. Reflection paper about the value and the role of the youth in the development and future of
society.

REFLECTION PAPER

-As we commemorate and remember of what our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal said, that youth is the
hope of our nation. For me as a youth, we should be the model of our society, we should be the one to
help build our nation and turn it into a better place where everyone would choose to live. We need to
become a better version of ourselves, Focus on our studies and prepare for what future brings us.
Despite of our issues and our current increasing population because of lack of guidance to those
younger age who got involved in some illegal doings like doing drugs etc. still we can restart a new life.
Because our mistakes in the past can’t define what our future would be. Just like in school, our mistakes
in the past will be our foundation and will be a lifetime lesson. Where we can gain knowledge and use it
as an inspiration to pursue our dream. As we go forward into our life we can encounter many challenges
and responsibilities in life so that at our early age we must be prepared for it when the time comes. We
need to be responsible of our actions. As a youth it is our obligation to be the hope of our nation, let’s
proved to everyone that we can change and develop our society, even though it is a small improvement
at a time as long as we did something and did our best to its fullest is a big achievement for us youth
people. For now all we can do is to pursue our studies, finish it and find a decent job that will support us
to reach our goals in life and to payback our parents for all the sacrifices they did for us.
Let our success be an inspiration to others especially to those youth.
Activity 1. Write an essay with the aim of answering the following: A. What is freedom? B. What is
lack of freedom portrayed in the novel C. How is situation in the novel different from today?

- Freedom is when you are free to do what you want to do without anyone stopping you. You’re free to
speak up and give your own opinion without worries that anyone contradicting it. Free to wear what you
want to wear, You’re free to choose your own path you take. In social media, you can post what you
want without minding all the criticism, you can do all of this because you are free. Sad to say but that
kind of freedom is not being portrayed in the novel entitled Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo of Dr.
Jose Rizal. People here in the Philippines are being controlled and colonized by the Spaniards. Filipino
people during that time are not free to do what they want to do. Women doesn’t have freedom to
study, they were believed to just stay at home doing household chores and wait until the time they’ll
marry someone. Abuse among women and child also portrayed in the novel. People who only belong to
the illustrados on have the chance to pursue education. And the most annoying part in the novel is that
it portrayed that the Filipinos became a slave of Spaniards. But now everything in the novel has
changed. After Dr. Jose Rizal and all of our heroes sacrificed their lives we finally achieved what we want
most and that is freedom. Now this time we can do anything without anyone controlling us. Men and
Women are now the same, there’s equality, there’s a law that protect every women and children when
they get abused. No one’s controlling us now, we are not a slave of anyone now. Everyone now can
pursue their dreams through education despite of their social status in the society. The government now
support those in need of financial support unlike the time of Spaniards. Filipino’s are now aware of their
rights and know how to fight for it. We can now enjoy, because of our ancestor’s sacrifices and we all
should give thanks by always remembering them.

1.Essay Writing: Write a response to Jose Rizal with the students situating themselves a century after
Rizal’s Time.

- For the students situating themselves a century after Rizal’s time, I want to say that we should be
thankful to our heroes for sacrificing themselves just to achieve our freedom. In order to pay all their
hard work we the students, should be continuing Dr. Jose Rizal’s doing. We, maybe not that intelligent
like our national hero, but we can be a student the best we can. A student who is deserving for their
sacrifices and a student who promote the teachings of Dr. Jose Rizal to the youth. A student who knows
what’s their rights and use to fight in what they think is right. Be the voice for who are afraid to speak up
and brave enough to voice out the opinion and suggestions we wanted to share for the development of
our society. Be wise and smart in making a decision and be sure you won’t regret it. Be a student who is
responsible to admit their mistakes and take this as a lesson where you gain some knowledge. We
should be aware of what is happening around us so that no one will ever take advantage of us. We
should be a student who knows what path we take and confident enough to be a responsible leader. A
student who builds a better relationship to one another and is the one who promotes unity to the
society. We should be a successful endeavor of our society and the one of the reason for the
development of our nation. Be an inspiration to others because of what you achieved. We can’t be like
Dr. Jose Rizal but we can be his future children, a child and a student who is intelligent in choosing the
right path. We will take and make a right decision that will benefit everyone.
2. Make a speech that will serve as a response to Rizal’s Letter to the women of Malolos.

- After reading Dr. Jose Rizal letter to the women of malolos, I came into a realization how women in
that era is being abused not only physically but also emotionally. Women known to be weak and don’t
have the strength to do what they wanted to do but, women of malolos proved them wrong after they
stand and fight for their rights against those who belittle their strength. Women is not weak we can do
what men can do. Women of Malolos is the best example of what bravery is after they fought to the
battle for the sake of achieving their rights. We should not be ignorance and pretend we know nothing
just because we are afraid this attitude of ours will surely lead us into our downfall. The letter written by
our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal taught us how to be aware of what is happening in our surrounding and
awaken our mind on how to be brave and speak up about what our opinions is. During these days,
women especially young girls don’t have the right to attend school because of the belief that they would
soon only be taken as wives and stay home with the children. But today, as what Dr. Jose Rizal wanted,
education is both granted to boys and girls that’s why I wanted to say to every youth, we should not
waste this opportunity given to us just because we are blinded by love, got addicted or even getting
pregnant at an early age. We should always remember that were lucky because we experienced that
those day’s young girls did not even experienced. Our education is very important because after we
finish it we can find a job that can change our lives, we can choose whom we wanted for the rest of our
lives but for now, we need to strive hard to achieve all of that or whatever dream you wanted to reach.
And for those who think they are weak, remember always that your weakness is also one on your
strength because that is where you gain confidence to prove to everyone that you can do it no matter
how hard it is for you. Be smart in making decisions because regrets always at the end and you can’t
change your mistakes but you can learn from it. Don’t let others be the reason of your downfall thus, let
them be the reason of your success someday. Ley the letter of Dr. Jose Rizal be your guide to be a better
version of yourself so that someday you can be a woman just like what Dr. Jose Rizal wanted you to be,
a woman who is smart and brave enough to fight for what they think is right.

Activity 2: Each student will have to choose their own bayani according to their standards and explain
why.

- In this day’s pandemic became our biggest problem in our nation after it spread all over the
world we are not even prepared for this kind of situation. Due to this pandemic the daily things
that we usually do suddenly stop like face to face classes and even working in our own field of
expertise. Everything became a new normal. But, together with these changes we have people
who is brave to sacrifice themselves of our own sake. People who are dedicated to their job
even though there is a danger to their lives. People like nurses, police, doctors etc. we call them
frontliners. Frontliners have the biggest role and risk during this pandemic season. They were
the one who face those Covid – 19 disease infected people. They are the one’s risking their lives
in this battle and not afraid of this unseen enemy. People who sacrifices their lives just to
protect our country and the people. They are also a human, they can also feel pain exhausted
and drain because of the burden of the responsibilities Covid – 19 gave them. Countless
sleepless nights because of the lack of people to facilitate the patients. The stress and even
some of them doesn’t have a time to see their family because of the call of duty and the
increasing rate of people who gets infected of this virus. Still they did their best to provide the
needs of every Covid – 19 patients. not just only nurses, doctors, polices, also those people who
perform swab testing to a thousands of people, uniform personnels, barangay officials, janitors,
street sweepers, workers in a supermarket all of them are all heroes because they are the one
who is in the frontline of this crisis. They are not only sacrificing their selves but also stands as
the pillar of our nation as they are the one who protected us in this battle they are the bravest
among the brave. Salute to these frontliners, they deserved to be called heroes because without
them maybe we can all be a victim and may they became our inspiration to became a person
who is dedicated to the profession we choose. Thanks to our heroes this crisis we are still
breathing and all we can do is to pray and hope for the better of the world we live.

Activity 3: Write an essay with the aim of answering the following: a. What are the anti – modern
aspects of colonial society portrayed in the Noli Me Tangere? B. Why can modernity be considered as
the central problem of Rizal’s Novel?

a.) What are the anti-modern aspects of colonial society portrayed in Noli Me Tangere?

- Anti- modern aspects opposed modernism of colonial society. Factors observable in the novels are:
How friars opposed Indios to have a proper education, which is portrayed by Padre Damaso. The school
is a symbol of empowerment since, as Rizal stated, education is a way to avoid succumbing to the
country’s domineering friarocracy. For instance, the church prevents Filipinos from learning Spanish in
school, which prevents them from obtaining the most prestigious jobs in the colonial society. Crispin and
Basilio are the ones who would have benefitted from a secular education. If only they had been offered
the opportunity to education, they wouldn’t have become sextons and wrongfully accused by the
church. Nowadays, quality education can be attained with government universities and is free to all.
Another factor is how the church meddles with the government in San Diego. It is evident that the
authority of the church is higher that the government in 19th century Philippines. In Rizal’s novels, he
portrayed that the friars also used the Catholic doctrines as a basis of a person, for example, Tasio;
though he is highly educated, he is ridiculed by most of society because his values differ from the norm.
Also, how they used exile, excommunication and death penalty as punishment this was seen when Don
Rafael Ibarra was sentenced to death penalty. Currently, the country has instated a law that separates
the church and the state that states that no law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion.
Lastly, how 19th century society views their women. Women were seen as the “weaker sex”. They were
expected to be subservient to their husbands and fathers. Their occupational options were also
extremely limited, and the middle-and-upper-class women generally remained home to care for the
children and the household. Maria Clara is supposedly created to be the perfect example of women in
the era. In this era, this concept formed the patriarchal society, a social system in which men hold
primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and
control of property and feminism, the advocacy of women’s right based on the equality of the sexes.

b.) Why can modernity be considered as the central problem of Rizal’s novel?

- Modernity is a concept of surpassing predecessors in terms of knowledge advances. Jose Rizal was
considered a modern man in his lifetime. Rizal desires modernity to the point that in his first attempt of
reformation in the Philippines, he wished the Philippines to be part of Spain - clearly; he wanted the
Philippines to progress.

Jose Rizal chose to exploit the Spaniards colonialisation and their effects on Filipinos, to their sociological
aspects and in the 19th century Philippine society in his novels. As Spaniards claimed, they supposedly
brought modernity with them to the Philippines which is not relatively true. According to Rizal’s logic,
the corrupt Spanish colonial bureaucracy relentlessly exploited the Filipinos, but blamed the
underdevelopment of the people on their presumed indolence. Rizal’s aims was to show that this view
was erroneous through recourse to both logic and historical fact, which brought Rizal to the work of
Antonio de Morga’s work. The facts proved through the colonialist view of Filipinos that pre-colonial
Filipino society was relatively advanced, suggesting that the presumed backwardness was because of
colonialism. And, of course, despite the claims of the heavy-handed colonial government and the
hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, colonial policy was oppressive. Rizal referred to the “boasted
ministers of God (the friars) and the propagators of light! who have not sowed nor do they sow Christian
morals, they have not taught religion, but rituals and superstitions.” The sentiment is not without merit
even today. Modernity is never the problem in the Spanish colonial period. It was their claim that the
Philippines would never have advanced and progressed without them. To consider modernity as the
central problem of the novel, it would seem that Rizal opposed the idea of the Philippines professing
and would only be seen as a cynical man who disproved modernity. Rizal ought to establish that the
Philippines do not need their, the Spaniards, “modernity” owing to the fact that even before they came,
the Philippines was already prospering with innovation. Rizal instead portrayed the oppressive
conditions of Spanish colonial rule since their stay was the major root of all the problems at that period.
Rizal hoped to educate Filipinos with these aspect, of Spanish Rigime, he wanted them to progress
through education and to open their eyes to the true villain in the country since the Filipinos gaining
knowledge. They covertly derail Jose Rizal’s efforts to spread secular knowledge to subversive, heretical,
and against the catholic doctrine. It was also shown in the Noli Me Tangere when Ibarra, a respected
figure, advocated the importance of education and intellect by building a school, but San Diego’s friars
are fearful of education’s power to liberate natives from the church’s control. The church curtails the
effectiveness of education even through punishments. Overall, In Rizal’s logic, Modernity can never be a
problem if it’s in the right context. Awakening the Filipinos mind through education can lead to a
positive change in the Philippines, and with this view the country can reform the corrupt system rather
that completely destroy it.
2. Essay writing or speech about a particular value Rizal Advocated. Students may choose a key issue.

(a) Heroism and the notion of sacrifice,

- Jose Rizal brought a new era for the Filipino people. His ability to inspire others and his compassion for
his people made him a national hero. In joining this movement, he inspired his fellow Filipinos to take
nonviolent action against the Spanish. His words awakened new ideas throughout the Philippines. Dr.
Jose Rizal has inspired many if not all Filipinos. Through his life, sacrifice and writing, he taught us to love
God, our country the Philippines and to love all Filipinos. Dr. Jose Rizal is perhaps the epitome of such
self-sacrifice though. He sacrifices his love life and a quiet life to gather knowledge around the world
that would be helpful in the struggle for reforms in the country. A hero symbolizes goodness. Rizal gave
us freedom by using goodness. Jose Rizal became the Philippine national hero because he fought for
freedom in a silent but powerful way. He expressed his love for the Philippines through his novels,
essays and articles rather than through the use of force or aggression. It is really true that the kindness
you gave to others will always come back to you. Rizal looked for ways to help the Philippines without
shedding of blood. He wanted to help through his pen. The characters and the personalities were really
representations of the Spanish colonial society in the Philippines. The novel shows the oppression of the
church, the corruption and cruelty of the friars, and the maltreatment from the Guardia Civil. The novel
unified the Filipinos and opened their consciousness of what is really happening in our country. The
novel gave courage for every Filipino to do something and fight back. Even though it is just a book, it
significantly influenced the Philippine revolution. Filipinos were tired of being slaves. They were tired of
being treated as puppets. They were tired of everything. Rizal has opened their hearts and minds. The
time has come to fight for freedom He believed that by writing about the cruelty of the Spaniards he can
open the mind of the Filipinos to fight back. When the novel was released and distributed, it is really an
excellent work of literature.
