V. Mistake correction.
Find and correct six mistakes
The war affected different people in different ways. Some enlisted out of a sense of duty to their
country, the others because they could not have done without it challenge. Volunteers were subjected
to a rigorous routine which made some civilians reluctant to commit them to a life of potential
hardship.
By the time they had joined up , however, it was too late to back up . Newcomers usually wore
their uniforms awkwardly but which pride, in spite of their realization that their new-found status
might be short-live . Yet months after war had been declared on the aggressors , and the initial elation
had subsided, many began to deplore the fact that the fighting was intruding into their personal lives.
They prayed for God to save them from timely death .

Find and correct four mistakes

We believe that we live in a rational or scientific age, but we do not. We have simply transferred
our ancient beliefs from the paranormal to the scientific domain. In the Middle Ages, it was greatly
believed that the dead could be brought back to life. Such beliefs, however, are not limited to the
Middle Ages. Nowadays it is science that is thought to be able to perform such a miracle, and even
now there are people keeping deep-frozen in anticipation of the scientific developments that will
resurrect them . Similarly, although we no longer regard illness and madness as the work of witches
and demons, we still attribute the inexplicable to paranormal phenomena such as UFOs or aliens from
outer space. In all probability , these ancient myths will endure and adapt because they meet a need of
mystery that is a fundamental part of the human character .

The salt water crocodile is the largest reptile on earth. As old and as primitive as the dinosaur,
this creature is 1. ………………… in the oceans of Sri Lanka , India, New Guinea, Australia and in
Southeast Asian countries.
With its razor-sharp teeth and huge , tough body, the crocodile has always instilled 2.
………………. in man. Crocodiles can attack at any time of the year, They are 3. ………………..

kill its prey by ripping off its flesh. In fact, the crocodile 5. ………………… chew at all. Its teeth are
designed only for grasping its victim 6. ………………... The crocodile eats by gulping off bits of flesh
and swallowing them. It 7. ……………… allows its powerful stomach to grind the food.
Since World War II, the demand for crocodile skin has increased greatly. To meet these
demands, crocodile farms have been formed. In these farms, crocodiles are 8. ………………. and
grown. They are slaughtered when they are about five or six feet in length. The skin of the crocodile is
used to manufacture handbags, belts and shoes. In Australia the crocodile meat is 9. ……………..
made into pies, sandwiches and sausages ! An 10. ………………….. 1.5 million crocodile skins are

Juvenile Crimes
Juvenile crime is not new, but crimes committed by young people today are 1. ……………..
more common and serious than they were in the past.
Before one can 2. ……………….. a solution, it is necessary to analyze the problem and to see
what has caused the explosion in juvenile crime. There are three main causes . Firstly, in the inner
cities, the social environment in which many young people find 3. ……………….. plays a major role.
Poverty and unemployment can create a sense of alienation, and a child who thinks that he has no hope
of 4. …………………. the wealth and happiness that other people will have often become frustrated
and violent. Secondly, an inadequate education system may also be 5. ……………. to blame. If a child
feels he is not valued and is a failure, he will be 6. …………….. to boredom, and open to bad
influences. Finally, the decline of the nuclear family and of traditional moral values may also play a
role, and a child who grows up without the support of caring, loving parents may not develop a sense
of responsibility or consideration for 7. …………………..
The problem of juvenile crime can 8. ………………. only be solved by removing those factors
that cause it. First of all, governments need to spend more on welfare benefits , but , more importantly,
they need to create employment so both parents and children feel that they are 9. …………… of
society and can contribute towards it and benefit from it. In addition, improvements in education are
vital as well, so that children from even the most 10. ………………. homes have abase and can be
given encouragement and the opportunity to succeed in life. And lastly, although governments can do
little to stop the decline in the traditional family, improved social conditions 11. …………… allow
more families to stay together.
To sum up, juvenile crime is a 12. ……………. that there is something wrong with society.
Young criminals are not 13. ……………… bad, they are reacting to the conditions in which they find
themselves . It is 14. ……………. when these conditions have been improved that crimes rates will fall

Dear sir,
I am writing in response to the article in last Monday’ sedition of the paper about facing the realities of
an ageing population. I would like to comment on the points that were 1. ……………….
First of all, I agree that the population as a whole is ageing. Improvements in health care have
contributed to this, but there is 2. ………………… factor as well. The birth rate is falling, and many
couples are choosing to have smaller families. In time, this demographic shift will have even greater
implications, and 3. …………………. will be even larger numbers of adults who are not economically
active.
This imbalance means that people , as you mention, will need to save 4. ……………… , as state
resources will be completely 5. ………………….. . However, as people are reluctant to save, the
government needs to bring in legislation to ensure that everyone has a pension plan.
I would, however, like to take issue with the terror of some of your comments about the elderly. By
saying that the 6. …………………. “ may not be able to cope”, and talking of their being “ at the
mercy of family goodwill” you seem to be taking a very negative view of old age. In fact, many old
people, 7. …………………… to improvements in health care, can lead active and full lives.
I also take issue with the idea that the elderly should be thought of as being a 8. ………….. to their
children. This is because I believe that grown up children have a clear moral responsibility to look 9.
………………….. their parents, and, one day, I fully expect to have one or both my parents living at
home or nearby. This is what happens in many other societies, and seems 10. ……………. natural.
Furthermore, far from being “ a burden to their children”, elderly people can bring benefits a to family
because of their wisdom and 11. ……………………. .
To sum up, people do need to be encouraged to ensure they are financially secure in their old age.
However we need to see a cultural change as well, and we need to encourage everyone to see the
family, not the state, as the ultimate provider of 12. …………….. for the elderly.
I look forward to hearing other readers’ view on the subject.
Yours faithfully,
Anne Jones
