Action Plan for Improving the Teaching of Reading

There are four things I would like to propose in order to improve the teaching of reading
in my school, especially in primary level (Grade 2-6):
1. Teaching skimming and scanning in every level in the first weeks of term 1.
Even though students have this reading skills lesson in grade 2, but this lesson should
exist in grade 3-6 in hopes that students can really master this basic skills of reading,
which can help them a lot in understanding different types of text. This surely can
support their understanding in different school subject texts they need to study.
2. Word recognition training should be given to students and its difficulty develops over
levels since this skill play an important role in increasing reading comprehension ability.
3. When teaching vocabulary, teaching guessing meaning from context should also
follow. By doing so, students have the chance to increase the skills of understanding a
word definition not in isolation.
4. Adding numbers of library books and providing more e-books for students in order to
broaden students’ general knowledge. A shortage of numbers of library books makes
students hardly have broad selection of books and genres. By adding numbers of
library books and providing e-books for them, students can broaden their schemata
when it comes to reading texts with various topics.
