1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to establish a safe Material handling using Cranes and other lifting
machines.

2.0 Scope
The scope of this procedure covers all Rig installation, Work shop & Site of John Energy Ltd.

3.0 Responsibility
a) The Tool Pusher / Assistant Driller/ Rigger is responsible to follow this procedure while Heavy
Material handling and lifting activity.
b) Crane / lifting equipment operator to follow the procedure
c) HSE Engineer/officer is responsible for implementing this procedure at Site/Workshop.

4.0 Procedure:

While handling Material following procedure is to be followed.

a) Planning:

• Ensure that there are no gas lines or power lines obstructions.


• Ensure that the rating (SWL) of crane and slings to be used, meets the requirement.
• Ensure that crane is positioned to use shortest boom and radius.
• Ensure that trained competent manpower is provided by crane service provider.
• Ensure that signaling person is available while Rig is moved over a ramp.

b) Safe Slinging:
Following care should be taken in respect to Slings.

• Do not exceed safe working load of slings.


• All slings shall be certified.
• Do not use damaged wire rope. Ropes having Wear, Damage, Kinking, Crushing, and
Corrosion. Hand Splicing of Wire Ropes is not permitted.
• Use correct pins and d shackles.
• Ensure load is balanced and stable.
• Ensure there are no sharp bends and kinks in wire rope.
• Do not ride on the material being loaded.
• Unload on Plain ground.
• Jerking / Snatching during Lifting to be avoided.

• Where the Crane/Lifting Machine Operator cannot CLEARLY see the Load, (from Pick up,
Travel, to Placing Down), a SECOND Person SHALL act as a "Banksman", (The Banksman
is to be formally Trained), Using Recognised "Hand Signals", (clearly understood by Both
Persons).
ƒ NO PERSON SHALL Stand near, or Walk below, any Suspended Load. TAG LINES are
mandatory to Control the Load. Loads SHALL NOT be Lifted or Swung across other
personnel.
ƒ Sufficient "Wire Rope", "Clips" and "Saddles" SHALL be Used, Maintained & correctly
Orientated, at all times.

N.B :- The number of clips/saddles depends on the Rope Size.

c) Cranes:
Following care should be taken about the Crane being used.
• Ensure that no Crain shall be used unless it has a current test certificate
• Observe safe load for lift radius.
• Cranes shall only be operated by Competent Appointed Operators
• No person shall stand/ride on load during the Lifting, swinging, Traveling or Lowering
Operations.
• Jerking/snatching during Lifting or Lowering Load to be avoided. Swinging of load or rapid
traversing to be avoided

• Load shall not be left suspended, whilst the Operator is away from his controls, or the machine
is shut down.
• Ensure crane operator and signalman adopts and understands signals adopted.
• Crane is jacked on firm Foundation and wooden logs.
• Crane operator should ensure that, no obstructions are there for movement of load.
• Crane operator should sound audible warning before lifting load.

d) Visual Inspection of Crane before loading


A daily inspection shall be made of the crane by the crane operator or other designated person. It
shall include but shall no be limited to the following:-

ƒ Check all fluid levels of the prime motor.


ƒ Check control mechanisms including control levers, brakes and clutches for proper
Operation.
ƒ Check for leakage or damage in air and hydraulic systems.
ƒ Visually check all wire rope for deterioration, damage and proper lubrication.
ƒ
ƒ Check the following devices where applicable.
• Boom hoist pawl
• Prime motor start and stop
• Crane hook latch
• Hoist limit switch
• Boom limit switch

• No damage, kinks or breaking of stands of wire ropes.


• Visually inspect crane components and structure to assure they have not been damaged.

• Visually check all wire rope for deterioration, damage and proper lubrication.

• Check for loose or missing bolts, pins, keepers or cotter pins.

• Check weight indicator and load cells for proper operation, where applicable.

• Check all control mechanisms for excessive wear of components and contamination by
lubricants or other foreign matter.

• Check electrical apparatus for malfunctions, signs of deterioration and moisture


accumulation.

• Visually check for cracked or worn sheaves and drums.

• Visually check for cracked or corroded members in crane boom and structure.

• Check boom angle indicators over full range for accuracy.

• Verify condition of all braking systems.

• Check belts and chains for proper adjustment (tension) and alignment.

Material handling to be started once all the above checks are completed and found satisfactory.
