A: Hey Mike. Haven’t seen you for ages. You look in great shape.
B: Yeah, I’ve been working out a lot.
A: How often do you work out?
B: Usually every other day for about 3 hours.
A: That’s a lot. What exercises do you do in that time?
B: Well I usually start every session with some cardio exercises like running on the treadmill or

A: Yeah, I need to get in shape. I have an at home and I used to cycle every day. I could
burn lots of calories that way. Then I got lazy and gave up. How did you tone up your muscles?
B: Well I’ve done lots of push-ups to work my upper body and crunches to work my abdominal

Students work individually and check in pairs. Explain the meaning of ‘cardio’ (cardiovascular exercise) – any
exercise that raises your heart rate. Running on a treadmill is good for cardio. Stretching helps avoid injuries.
Crunches work the abdominal muscles (abs). Pull-ups, push-ups and arm curls are good for strength training.

3. Vocabulary check

Students complete the conversation individually and check in pairs. Be prepared to answer any vocabulary questions,
e.g. ‘get in shape’, ‘engage’ (involve in something), ‘reps’ (repetitions of a particular exercise movement, e.g. lifting
a weight) and ‘sets’ (groups of reps). A number of phrasal verbs are featured in the conversation which will be
studied in the next exercise.
