Assignment: Due date: June 10, 2021

Prob. 1 (05 marks)

As shown in Figure below, the curves A and B represent load deflection curve from full scale static loading

tests of clayey and sandy soils respectively. Discuss the behaviour of these curves to determine the

ultimate load, Pult. (not more than 05 sentences).

Prob. 2 (05 marks)

Calculate the pile group bearing capacity if the piles are placed 3.5ft center to center and joined at the top

by a square pile cap supported by nine piles. The pipe pile's allowable load is 93.83 kips with a FOS of

2.5. The dia. of the pile is 5 in.

Prob. 3 (10 marks)

An 18 in. diameter concrete pile is driven at a site as shown in Figure. Determine the design capacity of

the pile, using a factor of safety of 2.5

Prob. 4 (10 marks)

A drilled shaft is shown in Fig. The uncorrected average standard penetration number (N60) within a
distance of 2Db below the base of the shaft is about 30.

i-) Determine the ultimate load carrying capacity

ii-) The load carrying capacity for a settlement of 0.5 in. Use Reese and O’Neill’s method
