Welcome to the Amigurumi
Wildlife Adventure
We are constantly inspired by the adorable, the amusing
and even the odd animals that share our world. Their
funny faces and fascinating habits are both intriguing
and familiar.

In this collection, we will encounter 12 such animals,

each from a different part of the world, each a different
shape and size, living in a variety of habitats. But there
is something that these 12 creatures have in common:
whether through habitat loss, or difficulty in adapting
to the changing climate, or through illegal poaching, all
of these delightful creatures are currently on the list of
endangered and vulnerable animal species.

Together let’s discover some of the things that make

each of them special, and get to know them a little
better through the art of amigurumi crochet.

So let’s take a peek into the leafy jungles, murky

freshwater lakes, open oceans and sparse windy plains
as we set out together on our Wildlife Adventure...

Pygmy
three-toed sloth
They are the smallest of the three-
toed sloths. To avoid predators the
sloths stay up in the tree canopy.
The green algae growing in their
fur helps them blend in with the
leaves. They are also surprisingly
good swimmers!

6 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Speckle-chested
piculet
These tiny woodpeckers live only
in a small area of the Andes in
northern Peru. They climb along
tree branches looking for insects
and use their short bills to dig out
nest holes in soft wood.

Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange 7

Orangutan
The orangutans spend their whole
life up in the tree canopy, their orange
coats blend in with the shimmering
leaves, hiding them from predators.
These clever apes can make umbrellas
from leaves, toothpicks and other tools
to help get out tasty morsels of fruit -
they learn through mimicking and have
amazing memory.

8 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Coquerel’s Sifaka
lemur
The Sifaka lemurs live in family groups
with a female in charge, and are active
during the day. When not searching for
food, they enjoy sunbathing, stretched
out on the branches. Unlike other lemurs
they stay upright when moving around,
their powerful hind legs can make leaps
up to 10 m (32.8 ft) from one tree
to the next.

Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange 9

Green sea
turtle
The green turtle is one of the largest
sea turtles. They spend most of their
lives in the ocean, diving down for about
5 minutes at a time between each quick
breath. They can even sleep underwater,
wedging themselves under rocks or coral
ledges to hide from predators, some have
a favourite sleeping spot they come back
to every night.

10 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Axolotl
They are known as the Mexican
walking fish, but are actually
amphibians. Unlike their relatives
the salamanders, Axolotls remain
in juvenile stage, the crown around
their heads is their external gills for
breathing underwater. In a way they
are salamander tadpoles!

Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange 11

Dugong
Although they seem nothing alike,
dugongs are related to elephants!
This marine mammal spends its days
grazing on seagrass, and is often
called a sea cow. Unlike their cousin,
the manatee, dugongs can’t
tolerate fresh water.

12 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Whale Shark
Whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, some are as long as a bus! These
gentle giants migrate around warm tropical seas feeding on tiny plankton.

Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange 13

Black-footed
ferret
Black footed ferret is one of the rarest
mammals in North America. In fact they
were thought to be extinct in the wild as
recent as 1979! These very curious agile
animals live on the shortgrass prairie.
The natural predator of the prairie dogs,
they even re-use prairie dog burrows to
raise their young. Currently there are
approximately 370 black footed ferrets
in the wild, with conservation efforts to
help them re-establish their numbers.

14 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Saiga antelope
Herds of these small antelopes once
roamed across almost the whole
of Asia and Europe. They are well-
adapted to life in the steppe, with
the unusually long nose working to
filter out dust in the summer heat
and warm up the cold winter air
when the temperatures drop.

Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange 15

Pangolin
These fascinating mammals are
covered head to toe in pinecone-like
scales! When threatened, the pangolin
rolls up into a ball, using the sharper
scales on the tail to scare away the
attacker. Sometimes referred to as
the scaly anteaters, these shy animals
are related to bears and cats.

16 Amigurumi Wildlife Adventure by Airali design and Irene Strange

Red Panda
Despite their name, the red pandas
are actually related to otters and
raccoons! The red colour of the fur
is a type of camouflage, it helps
them blend in with the red moss in
their natural habitat. Red pandas are
solitary animals, they spend most of
their time up in the tree canopy.

Every project starts with an idea and
choosing the right materials to bring
the idea to life. For the wildlife
adventure, we wanted to work
with a palette inspired by nature.

There are subtle greys, neutrals

MATERIALS
All of the projects in this collection are made in Ricorumi Cotton DK from Rico Design.
The full list of the colourways and yarn amounts needed to complete all 12 designs
are presented on the next page. Two of the designs are worked with yarns held togeth-
er with mohair, this is optional but gives a lovely fuzzy texture to the finished project.

notes on yarn substitution

We recommend working the patterns in DK weight yarn and a matching crochet hook.
Similar 100% cotton yarn from other brands are: Paintbox Cotton DK, DMC Happy
Cotton DK, Hobium La Mia Cottony.

Using a smaller crochet hook and thinner yarn the amigurumi will be smaller in size
while preserving the same proportions. We suggest: Anchor Baby Pure Cotton, Hobbii
Rainbow 8/4, DMC Natura Just Cotton.

Some of the animal’s shapes could lose a bit of the definition if made in acrylic or
wool yarns.

stitch guide
The following stitches and terms are used throughout
the patterns, written in US crochet terms.

The patterns are worked in the “amigurumi Chain Stitch (ch)

method”, in a continuous spiral without closing the
rounds or starting chains. Use a stitch marker to Single Crochet (sc)
mark the rounds, moving it up as you work.

Repeating sections are shown in (round) brackets.
Invisible Decrease (inv dec / sc2tog)
Stitch totals are shown in [square] brackets at the
end of each row or round. Magic Ring
