Direction: Based on the excerpts from the writings of Emilio Jacinto’s Kartilya ng

Katipunan and Liwanag at DIlim, answer the following questions:

1. How does the Katipunan understand/make sense of the following?

a) State and Government
The Katipunan wrote a comprehensive letter and it was clear on how
it viewed the state and government. The letter was describing the
state as the people who’d always fight and stand for the country. This
state was the people who’d make actions or movements for the good
of the country. It is like a job for the people to strive for the
betterment of the country and protect the land at all cost. On the
other hand, the government is needed in order to give assistance to
the people, to guide them for the things that could ruin the land and
also to maintain or improve some aspects in our country. The
government is not created to make rules for their own motives,
instead, it’s purpose is to give everything that exists in the land a
benefit to have a safety and comfortable environment, especially to
protect the land. In fact, they compare it to a vehicle, it needs an
expert person to drive it, for it to work smoothly and effectively. By
this, it is clearly understandable that the Katipunan considered the
government as a head of the nation, it should be the bridge of the
people living in the country to understand and be united as one for
the goal of our land.

b) Leadership
The Katipunan viewed leadership as a duty which has a goal not to
use the power and the authority for a selfish goal but to guide and
give assistance to the people, to maintain the peace, unity and to
give orders which has the mind to prioritize and commit oneself to
the country. To make everything more comprehensive, it states
points out that a leader should serve the country not the other way
around. The authority and the power should be given on this land
which we should protect. Everyone should be fair and just. No one
should be treated differently or no one shall receive special
treatments even if the person holds a title for this land.

2. How does the Katipunan understand/make sense of the Filipino Nation?

The Katipunan undeniably made sense of the Filipino nation because it
helps the nation understand what a leader should do, how does leadership
works and what is the purposes of the government. It also helps the Filipino
nation in understanding how our land is important that we need to protect
it especially in the past, people are confused, they lack knowledge in almost
everything and they settle for less, this words that the Katipunan published,
helps them build their minds and creates knowledge about how a nation
should work. We can't deny that even in our generations, leaders always
received a special treatment from the people in our country and if they did
the right thing, the people will worship them, but it shouldn't be like that
because doing the bare minimum shouldn't be glorified, and this letter, is a
big help for everyone to, for us to be reminded what's the purpose of
everything. And it should be, because we protect our land, it is ours, we
should create a safe, peaceful and comfortable community for us to live.
3. What are your reflections on these writings about some important ideas of
the Katipunan?
The letter which the Katipunan had published has touch my soul. It is
written on how they're patriotic. There's no words to describe how they
love the land that we're living in the present, on how they are willing to
fight and give their lives for this land. It also showed we're still one despite
of the existence of many languages that we are using. It is showed how
unity and peace is important in a country. I am still amazed because they
managed to think of this brilliant ideas to make this country effective, safe
and to be able to answer the needs of the people. Lastly, this shows how
important the country is, and in any situation, we should always protect our
country because it is our duty, and whoever refuse to protect the country
fails, in whatever reason, that person will still be wrong for not protecting
the country.
