teach you the English spoken language, common expressions, pronunciation tips and
interesting cultural stories. I hope to keep this fun, useful and interesting. Let´s do it!

In this lesson we are going to be talking about: What I would like to do?
But before we start, we are going to do some English exercises. As always, let’s go ahead
and start with a joke:
A man goes into a library, and walks towards the counter and says:
- I would like to get a bar of chocolate, please!
-The librarian answers quietly: Sorry sir. I know what you want, but this is a library!
And the man whispering replies: Oh sorry, a bar of chocolate, please.
It was funny, right?

Well, related to some expressions used in the previous joke, I want you to listen and repeat
after me each word I say:

WOULD LIKE TO:

As you can notice, we use would like to say politely what we want, especially when making
offers and requests. Notice that verbs that follow would like to, are in the infinitive form.

Don't get confused and check the difference between WANT and WANT TO.
Want means ‘wish’ or ‘desire’. We always follow want with a singular or plural noun.
On the other hand, we always follow want to with a verb in the base form.
For example: I want to go to the library.

and they’re here because they want to tell us a little bit about them and their future goals. I

• Jorge: Thank you for the invitation.
• Interviewer: So, before we start talking about your careers, life and ambitions,
would you like to introduce yourselves, please?
• Jorge: Ok, ladies first. Gina, you start.
• Gina: Hi everyone. My name is Gina Johnson, I’m 21 years old and I studied
aerospace engineering at UTP. I’m so excited to be here.
• Jorge: It’s my turn, now. My name’s Jorge Vargas, I’m 23 years old. I studied
industrial engineering at UTP. I’m glad to be here, as well.
• Marco: Hi, everybody. I’m Marco Ferri. I’m 25 years old. I studied architecture at
UTP, too. In fact, the three of us graduated from UTP.
• Interviewer: Well, I have some questions for you, but before I start, I want to say:
Congratulations! You are in your early twenties and you’ve already finished a
career. That’s amazing, that’s what our nation needs the most, well-prepared
people like you.
• Marco: Thank you.
• Interviewer: Why did you choose this career field? Tell us a little about it.
• Gina: Basically, it was since I was a child that I was obsessed with anything
technical. I don’t know where it came from, I suppose, it was because most of my
friends, at a very young age, had all sort of motorbikes. Also some TV programs
about technology and all sorts of stuff were a great influence.
• Interviewer: I see. How about you, Jorge?
• Jorge: In my case, I wasn´t sure about what to study after I graduated from high
school, so I decided to take a vocational orientation test. It helped me a lot. So, I
recommend students before studying a career, they first take a vocational
orientation test.
• Interviewer: That’s a good point!
• Marco: Well, I began taking community college classes to get better at my newly
discovered vocation: Drafting! For the first time in my life, I did really well in school.
I kept learning more and more about drafting and architecture. I have an incredible
memory for buildings, environments, and relationships of space.
• Interviewer: Definitely, you rock!
• Interviewer: What are your goals?
• Gina: First of all, I would like to start my own company here in Peru into
aerospace, in order to provide supplies for airline companies. I really want to start
as soon as possible. I wouldn’t like to start a company abroad. First, I would like
to contribute with my country.
• Interviewer: That´s really fascinating. So Jorge, tell us…
• Jorge: I would like to gain more experience in my field, because I want to start a
consultancy firm for giving insight into the companies, methods for streamlining
 processes; suggesting ideas for reducing waste in various areas, as well as
creative problem-solving skills for hidden safety issues.
• Interviewer: I agree; a consultancy would be great! Marco…
• Marco: Apart from architecture, I have a major in business management. I want to
join a solid company, I would like to design architectural projects for industries, as
well as building housing complexes with a modern and functional style. In other
words, I would like to create designs for new construction projects. Oh well, not
only designing and building, but also supervising, operating, constructing and
maintaining infrastructure projects and systems.

No se confunda y compruebe la diferencia entre QUERER y QUERER.

Querer significa 'deseo' o 'deseo'. Siempre seguimosquerer con un sustantivo singular o

check: want to and would like to.

Let's check this example:

Why would you like to work with us?
 Girl: I want to continue studying, but it means that I have to look for a job.

Let's start checking the grammar structure about WOULD LIKE TO. Remember that we use
all the subject pronouns (I, YOU, WE, THEY, HE, SHE, IT + WOULD LIKE TO + SIMPLE
FORM OF THE VERB).

For example:

Paulo is a civil engineer. He wants to design an ecofriendly building in Lima in the future.

project for his company soon. He could start studying online now, but he is focusing on his
project now.

2. Major: Biomedical engineering - Professional: Biomedical engineer

Tom is a biomedical engineer. He works in a hospital, but he would like to work for a
