TASK NO. 3.

TASK: Identify the use of bulldog grips. Demonstrate joining of 2 ends of wire ropes or
make a temporary Eye with the Bulldog grips, often used with Bottle Screw for wire lashing
and securing cargo.

AIM: To learn to use Bulldog grips, Spanners and lashing tools to make a Temporary Eye at
the end of a Wire Rope.

REQUIREMENTS:

 Wire rope

 Bulldog grips

 Spanners

PRECAUTIONS:

 Always put up bolt on tail and bridge plate on standing part.

 Always secure Wire rope end in position and fix the Bulldog Grips (Minimum 3 Nos.)
equally spaced, hand tighten the nuts after adjusting the end of wire by pulling to
make the eye of required size.

 Use appropriate size and numbers of grips as per the diameter of wire rope.

DESCRIBE: To make a temporary eye on the wire rope by using bulldog grip—

 It is important that minimum 3 Nos. bulldog grips must be fitted with bridge and
bolts over the tall end of the rope and short end pulled to adjust the required size
before fixing the bolts and nuts of Bulldog Grips tight.

 At least 3 bulldog grips must be used on rope up to 24mm in wire, 4 grips on 24mm
to 34mm and five and more grips should be placed at the distance up to 6-9 times
diameter of ropes. Grips are supplied in various sizes to fit each wire rope.

 It is essential to mark the grips on the wire ropes and the grips should be inspected
for any slippage under varied stress and strain experienced in sea way. Such wire
ropes joints are often used for temporary lashing and securing Cargo which are
exposed to varied loads.
