Build the Rope Socket

Wedge & Sleeve Style Wire Rope Socket

The stuffing box should be disassembled and ready to make up before starting
the task.

Steps
Slickline wire end is very sharp and may pierce gloves. Operate wire with
extra care.
Always make a safety handle in the end of the wire when you pull the wire
and secure the end of the wire when it is not attached to a rope socket.
Keep area clean to avoid any loss of parts of the stuffing box and rope
socket.
Do Not work above scaffold grating.

1 Remove 100 ft of wire from the drum.


2 Secure the stuffing box in the vise.
3 Remove the blow out plug retainer and the blow out plug.
4 Put the wire through the sheave wheel, packing nut, and packing.
5 Push the wire through the bottom until there is 2 ft of wire comes out.
6 Install the blow out plug.
7 Verify that blow out plug is installed inside the stuffing box.
8 Install the blow out plug retainer and tighten it with a wrench.
9 Pull 15 ft of wire through the bottom of the stuffing box.
10 Put the wire through the rope socket from the fishing neck side.
11 Put the sleeve over the wire end.
12 Make a 90° bend on the wire end.
13 Measure the wedge width, and make another 90° bend.

Steps
14 Measure the wedge length, and make the cut ¼ in shorter than the wedge length.
15 Put the sleeve over the wedge.
16 Pull the wire through the top of the rope socket until sleeve touches rope
socket.
17 Twist the rope socket so that it turns freely around the wire.
18 Attach the rope socket to the tool string.
