On 2 June, Kampung Telaga Tujuh was a hive of activity. There was a sense of excitement. The
villagers were gathered at the community hall for the River Carnival project. The aim of the carnival
was to educate the people on the importance of clean rivers. The carnival also aimed to teach the
villagers the value of working together to clean up the rivers. The carnival kicked off at 9.00 am and

C. Read the text and answer questions 1 to 10. Choose no more than five words and/or a
number from the text for each answer.

Many runners have a hard time determining and keeping

with their pace. A running pace is a consistent, average speed you
run over a given distance. It differs according to routes and distances
you are covering.
Firstly, you need to be consistent with your training. If you are a beginner, putting in the miles
for running trains your body to adapt to longer and faster runs. The important factor is to know the
limits of your body. As you improve, those limits will be stretched further and further. Secondly you
need to know your distance. In any run, you want to train your pace and know your distance. It does
not matter if you measure it by length or by the number of steps. As long as you know your distance,
you can determine the speed needed to successfully cover the distance.
Thirdly, you need to plan your run ahead. At this stage, you need to consider a few factors. You
need to know when you are running and the details about the distance covered. If you plan a 5 km
run, you may want to know where you will be when you hit that first kilometre.
Next, use a watch when going on a run. A watch can be helpful in many ways. Most importantly,
it functions as a check-in device. If you know your distance, you can break your pace down easily. If
you have a 6 km run planned and you want to run at a 10-minute-per-1.5 km pace, you will know
that your run should take roughly 40 minutes. You also need to check your watch when you hit the
first 1.5km mark to make sure you are at the right pace.
Some runners may find portable music players a burden. However, it may end up being your
favourite running companion. A music player preloaded with fast energetic tunes can give you that
extra push to pick up your pace.
Finally, a runner needs to adapt to all kinds of conditions. Anything can happen when going on a
run. You might feel tired or energised. It might even rain or you might run into traffic. Just remember
to be flexible and adapt to your conditions. You should adjust on the run and have fun in the process.

1. Runners face the challenges of determining and ________________ with their pace.

2. To train consistently, a beginner must train his/her body to _________________ to longer

G. Essay Writing (Descriptive Essay)

Write a story based on the notes given below. Your story should not be less than 120
words. Make your story as interesting as possible.

Mandy - baking cookies - planned to eat them all by herself - heard doorbell

ring - left cookies on kitchen counter - friends brought bread pudding -

wanted to chat - Mandy - took bread pudding - rudely sent them away - went

to kitchen - cookies missing - eaten by cat - enraged - chased after cat - tripped

lost balance - dropped bread pudding

Greed Does Not Pay!

Mandy had just placed the tray of chocolate chip cookies in the oven. She could not wait

for the cookies to be ready. She had timed her baking session so that no one would be in the

house when she baked them. She planned to eat them all by herself before any of her family

members returned. The smell of cookies was making her salivate. Just then the oven timer

rang. She gleefully removed the tray and left the cookies to cool on the kitchen counter.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of the doorbell. She wondered who would visit her at

three o’clock in the afternoon. She peeped through the window and saw two of her

classmates standing there. She wanted to make them think there was no one at home, but
9

they had seen her looking out the window. She had no choice but to open the window.

She greeted them rather coldly and asked what they wanted. One of them handed her a

bowl of bread pudding which she had just made. They asked if they could come in for a chat.

Mandy firmly said that she was busy. She took the bread pudding and told them that she

was so busy that she didn’t have any time for small talk. Her two friends walked away

disappointedly. Mandy was oblivious to their feelings as she was only interested in the free

dessert she had just been given.

She chuckled at the thought of having both the cookies and the bread pudding all by

herself. Alas, when she went into the kitchen, the cookies were gone. She saw her cat sitting

on the counter, looking very satisfied after eating all the cookies.

She flew into a frenzy and chased after the cat. Unfortunately, she tripped on the

doormat and lost her balance, dropping the bowl of bread pudding. Her greed had caused

her to lose both the cookies and the bread pudding. It was a lesson she would never forget.
