Summative Assessment
Design an experiment to investigate how temperature affects the speed of dissolving.Explain why?
The SOI talks about how changes in our surroundings such as temperature and pressure affect the arrangement of atoms in
space whilst, the summative task involves investigating and measuring how changes in temperature affect the arrangement
of atoms and hence affect the rate at which a substance dissolves. Therefore the summative assessment and SOI are in
alignment.

17 Summative Lab report Thursday at 10:00 AM
Dear Grade 6,
You will have your summative assessment next Thursday (17th of Sept)
It will be a Criteria B summative. So you will be asked to write a lab report and interpret the results.
Make sure you go through the Criteria B sheet (lab sentence starters) shared with all of you on Google classroom - so
you know what is expected of you and how you are meant to respond based on the strand and criteria level.
We have done a Criteria B - during the short unit on Scientific inquiry where you all planned and carried out a lab
and you all have also evaluated yourself based on Criteria B -after writing your lab report on boiling point of different
substances.
If there are any doubts you have regarding Criteria B and what is expected of you please reach out to Ms Manju or
me and clear your doubts.
Thanks

Description
Criteria B (all strands)
Criteria C (i,ii,)
Learning Experiences
3. Inquiry cycle - A basic idea of how an inquiry cycle works and its steps
ILO 1: Students can define matter and classify objects as matter and non matter
1a. Doing a KWL to understand what students understand by matter. Defining matter as everything around us that has a mass
and occupies space.
1a. What is mass? What are its units? How do we measure the mass of an object? Activity to do with testing different materials
if they have a mass. Differentiate between mass and weight
Activity: We give Students different measuring cylinders- measure the volume of the water in cm3 and then an object that has
a regular shape and one with an irregular shape - understand how to measure the volume of each- lxbxh -cm3 or m3 and the
difference between ml and cm3
1c.Testing out different objects to see if they occupy space and have a mass - Is it matter? the worksheet - differentiate between
matter and nonmatter
ILO 2: Students can identify the three states of matter - solids, liquids and gases and explain their properties in
terms of arrangement of particles/atoms
2a. Activity: Students will classify objects and form groups based on size, shape, texture, colour
2b. Introducing the three states of matter - solids, liquids and gases and classifying the objects
2c. Students based on the classification come up with the properties/characteristics for solids ,liquids and gases and explain
them
2d Role play- to show the arrangement of particles being different in each state of matter
2e. Activity - using grains to show spatial arrangement of particles in each state of matter
Neev Academy

An Introduction to Matter

ILO 3: Students can explain how one state of matter can change to another by heating the substance. Using water
as an example to explain and define the following terms - melting, boiling/evaporation, condensation, freezing
and sublimation
b. What is changing in each of the states as heat energy is passed through it?
e. Do you think a substance can change from a solid directly to a gas and vice versa? and skip one phase completely - introduce
sublimation
ILO 4: Water as a case study - Explain why ice being a solid is lighter than water, describe hydrogen bonds and
the anomalous property of water.
a. Investigating why ice is lighter than water - creating a hypothesis .using a video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UukRgqzk-KE
and discussion to understand the lattice structure of ice cubes and describe hydrogen bonds and draw the lattice structure
b. Annotate a comprehension passage on the Anomalous property of water and discuss the advantages and disadvantages on
the anomalous property of water.
c. Phase Change diagram - to draw and describe how each phase changes and explain what is happening at each phase
d. Formative CYU variables, matter and property of water phase change - that is assessed based on Cri A and C
ILO 5: Define a pure substance and compare and contrast between an element and compound.
a) Explain the term pure - Show students an advertisement on pure baby foods, honey. What does the word pure mean to them
- can use Frayers model.
Elements are pure substances because they contain only one type of atom - Eg of elements to name and show
Define compounds- Do you think compounds are pure substances? What makes you say that? Eg. of compounds to name and
show
b. Show some examples of different elements and compounds - get the students to identify if they are elements or compounds
ILO 6: Define a mixture and the different types of mixtures - homogeneous and heterogenous, Explain simple
methods of separation of mixtures like evaporation and Filtration, Define a solution, and identify a solute and
Neev Academy

Neev Academy Babul Das, Ritika Shah, Manju Nair
solvent in a solution
a. What are mixtures then? Can mixtures be pure? Show students two examples - salt and water, and sand and water
Observe the two and write down what is the difference seen between the two mixtures
How would each of the mixtures be separated? salt and water - evaporation, Sand and water we use Filtration techniques
Mini Lab: Students use filtration to separate sand from water and observe the steps and write them down
Define the term homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures - in one homogeneous - where the salt has dissolved completely-
the salt in this case is called the solute and water is the solvent - both combine to form a solution. Define a solute and a solvent
in a solution
b. Show various examples of solutions- students will identify the solute and solvent in each case and write it in a table
ILO 7: Define a saturated solution and explain how more of the solute can be dissolved in a saturated solution by
heating and explain crystallization - the method of separating the solute from the solvent in a saturated solution
b. Formative: Using the same saturated solution prepared in the previous class students investigate whether heating the
saturated solution allow for more of the solute to be dissolved and explain why - present a hypothesis, and explain - Cri B and
C
c. How do we separate the solute from the saturated solution - How many of you have seen crystals? Sugar crystals prepare
with the saturated sugar solution.
Summative will be announced and carried out Cri B and Cri C - The formative/s done in class earlier would help the
students know what to expect.

Differentiation
Using various approaches to learning - role play, reading exercises, experiments, presentation.
Using various thinking routines to break down the learning- Frayers model, KWL
Reflections
General Reflections
Why do we think that the unit or the selection of topics will be interesting?
I think the unit on Matter would be interesting as students already know about the different states of matter - and have heard
of solids liquids and gases - however other states of matter like the plasma, Bohr-Einstein model they have only heard about
but want to know and are interested to understand it better.
What attributes of the learner profile does this unit offer students opportunities to develop?
Neev Academy

Inquirers, communicators and thinkers- These are the learner profiles that are developed in the student or offers
opportunities to be developed - For eg: Students are constantly inquiring in order to understand how temperature affects
the behaviour of the different states of matter. They are also thinking and trying to notice patterns and working on these.
What difficulties did we encounter while completing the unit or the summative assessment task(s)?
There were some challenges experienced in light of the pandemic, one being that the summative was supposed to be a
Criterion B - which involved doing an experiment - making observations and then drawing an inference. However, because
of online learning I managed to do a Criteria B - but needed to provide them with observations and then got the students to
design an experiment for it
I created a bridge unit - called An Introduction to Scientific Inquiry which proved to be very useful for the students of
Grade 6- as many of them coming into Grade 6 understood various scientific skills at different levels - so reviewing steps
of scientific inquiry, report writing, variables and graph plotting helped prepare and strengthen the foundation. The students
were also in a better place to know what to expect
Used a variety of teaching strategies, so that it helped cater to differentiation/ different learners . Used role play, audio-visual
aids, made of use of different materials to understand spatial learning
What can students carry forward from this unit to the next year/level of study?
Students can carry forward all the skills learnt from one year to the next year - the skills are important to be carried forward
- as the same skills of making inferences, designing an experiment using scientific method, plotting graphs are used - only
the level of difficulty changes. however the skills used are the same.
